I remember watching a few videos on it a few years ago too, will have to check them out again to see what's going on. I recall reading that Ford adopted the same system so they won't suffer any carbon buildup issues but not on the 2.3 though.

I would drive one of those. The oddball orange looks good, so does the blue.

They did indeed for that one on the 2019 models. Now for 2020 it's Rapid Red that costs extra. They still have saber as an option. Rapid Red looks better but it's still on a Ford.

    I had a (WORK TRUCK ... I sure as shit didn't buy one..) a 05' Ranger with the famously exploding 4.0L V-6 ...
Where the timing chain, gears, camshaft all just came UN-glued one day (At 60K miles) and basically destroyed the top-end of the engine.
My boss at the time (The Mayor) had it towed to the Ford dealer to have it fixed and the Service Manager point-blank told him 'Yeeeeeah .. These engines have been having this problem...' So in other words, Ford knew these engines were gonna come apart at some point in time.
Since it was a 2nd-hand truck and 60K miles on it, there was no warranty.. So he had a re-mfg engine put in to the tune of $5-6K ... 'Good as new!' right?? And it still never ran right. It 'ran' but.. The 'check engine' light was always coming on/off .. And nobody could ever seem to figure out what it was.
So I had to put up with it for a few years and then I retired.
I'd basically rather have a gigantic highly infected puss-oozing boil on my ass with maggots eating out of it, with no cure in sight ... Before I ever owned a Ranger.

But you can still be enjoying a Tacoma at 250,000 miles, the Ranger? I don't think so.

That sucks you had a shitty experience. Was it pre 2004 model by any chance?

Those 4.0s did have 3 timing chains yes, afterthought on a 4.0 pushrod engine. They added dummy crankshaft and made it into single overhead cam engine, crazy design. But it did make 47 more hp and 30 more tq i believe, also made it a bit more fuel efficient.

They changed the design/material of the cassettes that kept the tension on the chains , after 2004 MY.

My 2007 ranger was amazing truck. Never let me down and never had a CEL in 7 years ive owned it. I had about 160k trouble free miles when i sold it and i wasnt nice to it at times. The biggest reasons why i sold it was because of those 3 timing chains and the lack of cab space. I knew sooner or later one of those chains will shit the bed. Nobody would even rebuilt these, you just buy a used 4.0L. I knew some people with late model rangers and they were quite happt with them. Also, i was on the ranger forum and quite a few guys had very high miles.

But still i wish i could have kept it and made it into a bush rig. I still miss it, it was a very simple machine except for the engine. I broke pretty much even selling it 7 years later.

I bought 2 fords with less than 10k miles on them in 2015 and 2016 respectively. I had to get rid of them due to maintenance issues in less than 3 years. I will never buy a Ford again. Being slightly cheaper isn't worth the hassle of ownership. Just thinking about those two pieces of shit gets me going. Ford had so many recalls on them, anything that wasn't related to air bags or seat belts they would do everything in their power not to fix.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Thats on top of turbos typically getting fouled up by carbon and blow-by in a FI DI engine. The numbers those engines put out are incredible but at what cost...

Yeah, had a 2007 4.0 myself. As soon as I dropped the oil pan and found plastic chunks of timing chain guide, it wasn't with me for very much longer.

I considered a Ranger briefly, but then the words "10-speed transmission", "turbocharged 4-cylinder", "ford", and "reliability" all collided in my head and I blacked out and found myself sitting in a Toyota dealership.
