Hmmmm idk.... I just found an engine from an 02 4runner for cheap, but I should've done more research I guess. I thought I just read that the 01-02 t4r were compatible with the 03-04

 

Might jump on this engine tomorrow... 01 T4R tranny and a 02 T4R engine. That setup should work

 

Grab the ecu too just in case Duno if their conmpatible with a taco wiring harness but better safe than sorry

 

If you need to worry about smog in your county/state, be sure to look up the rules...in CA and NY at least you can't swap in an engine that's older than the vehicle you're putting it in. Has to be the same year or newer

I don't know if they would be able to tell honestly, every smog I've done here has been pretty quick... They don't get down and dirty on the details at least not where I've gone. Just one of those better safe than sorry things

See, all I can see is you have an '03 Prerunner.

Nowhere until now do you state you've got an older than 03-04 engine.

That 01 Transmission will mate with that 02 Engine just fine.

I always thought 01-02 4Runners were drive by wire but I could be wrong.

 

I could be wrong too, I'm familiar with Tacoma's but not the 4Runner powertrain.

Especially since 3rd Gen 4Runner stopped before 1st Gen Tacoma did...

 

4th gen Runners started in 03 right? I'd think the 02s and maybe 01s were drive by wire... Should definitely check on that

 

Looked it up, they're drive by wire as well, with cable back up.
