Hood vents on the old XJs are an evil necessity. They run way hot, even when the cooling system is working correctly.

 

That's because the radiator is Honda sized haha, it's like a candy bar shape

 

Yeah, plastic too. Too small for the motor really. Had an XJ for a while, years ago. Had to replace the radiator and revamp the cooling system after it blew the radiator one day. Drove it all the way to work, parked and was going inside when it blew on me. I installed hood vents when I replaced the radiator and did the other stuff and never had issues again.

I've had a few buddies with XJs, one guy specifically that's been off roading for well over 30+ years

He's had XJs in the past but his 2 biggest gripes are; unibody construction, and factory suspension on leaf setup with weak axles to boot.

He's gone and done custom 4 link setups with 1 tons and more only to settle on an old FJ and Wranglers for several years.

My brother is picking up a nice bottle of scotch for my dad for us 3 kids to split, since my dad's retiring at the end of the year.

I forget what it was, but something about the older motor being better? I forget, not an XJ guy to know.

Think it had to do with the heads?

 

His company should get him that $2500 one lol, he gave them 40 years after all.

He wasn't planning on retiring until the end of next year, but after 2020 the company is forcing a bunch of the old timers to retire which is pretty shitty imo but not so bad for him since he was just 1 year out anyway. But a bunch of others are getting forced out much earlier than they wanted.

It's like that here for anything 25 years old or older for $7 forever tags.

Then a legislator in the DAMN shoebox Chevy club wanted to roll the law back to be for anything from 1957 or older. That was creating some BAD BLOOD at car shows.
