driving a stock truck isn’t my idea of fun. I’d like it to look a little cool if I’m gonna make the switch. I just really wasn’t aware that hitting 20 mpg with 33s would be a unicorn ask.

Is there something wrong with keeping the Raptor? I like my Tacoma, I get 19-20mpg in mixed driving with original sized tires. I see the guys I work with justify a new vehicle purchase with all sorts of calculations that only make sense in their head. If you’re driving 80 miles a day and gas is $2.75 a gallon, and you commute 260 days a year, the difference between 9mpg and 20mpg is $3,380. If you are only improving from 9 to 15mpg you’ll save $2,427.
What kind of cost will you incur by trading?

I looked into the 4 cyl Silverado but it’s too much truck for me. Plus kinda the same issue, leveling with 33s drops mpg to similar numbers I’m currently getting.

I was also surprised with how bad the MPG was when I got my Tacoma. I had a 6.7 Powerstroke on 35’s and got 20+ average

Pay attention to wheel and tire weight when you do decide to purchase. I’d stay away from 10 ply tires

    13mpg city and 17mpg freeway.

Conversly, the same engine in my Camry gets 26mpg all the time, but a lighter vehicle with non AT tires.

I own the truck outright, no payment since January. I live in CA so gas is $3.29 per gallon of 87.

I was really hoping to see some real world examples of Gen 3s leveled with a decent size tire getting 20 mpg easy. I’m really happy I asked, the salesman was saying 20-22 easy with 33” tires.

I like the adaptive cruise, it slows you down to match the speed of the car in front of you so you cannot absent mindedly plow into someone with CC engaged

As for mpg, i have 4x4 not 2x4 so it may differ a bit i get about 16 mpg on average. Sometimes in the highway i can get 21 if im driving gently but if im smashing the gas i’ve gotten as low as 12. This is with c load 265’s, a camper shell; sliders and skids. With the mods that you specified i’d expect 18-21 mpg

I honestly think the only way for you to be satisfied is if you get a diesel.
So many options right now with ford, chevy, and ram all having 6 cylinder diesels.

I wouldn't even look at Tacoma's anymore. You will most likely regret it if you buy one.

Fair enough! And it's a good question. I think if we're honest even a lot of stock Tacoma's aren't seeing 20mpg avg

Buy a 3rd gen build it with all the weight you want and then find a very skilled mechanic to swap in Toyotas diesel they put in the Hilux's? Heard of people paying a pretty penny for that service though.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Bigger diameter tire, fewer revs per mile but more rotational effort (increased rotation mass) required.
If you regear you're just increasing the revs for the same distance traveled and still trying to maintain that rotational inertia. Ain't gonna help your MPGs.
Ask me about MPG in about 12-18 months after my '21 TRD ORAC is starting to get broken in (I'm VERY anal about tracking it). My '06's MPG didn't really reach a plateau until about 85K miles (got over 14 years of exact data).

My vote is that you'll be better served sticking with the OEM tire size & OEM wheels.

I'm driving a pro (less/no rake and no air dam), "upgraded" AT tires, and tuned. I'm heavy on the pedal, and my average is ~16 MPG city. ~15 Highway (interstate going 79 MPH for 100+ miles). Before tuning and when I had the OR I was getting ~15 city and ~14 highway. Most of my driving is on flat, somewhat windy roads (coastal south east).

Stock here still with anything that would effect mpg much. Get anywhere from 18.5-23 depending on how aggressive i am.

^^^ This guy is giving you realistic expectations. He knows what he's talking about.

Gonna be tough. Seems crazy, I know. The Tacoma is badly underpowered IMO. I came from an F150 with 3.5 EcoBoost. It was hard to give up that engine.

Tacoma also looses significant MPG going 70 mph vs going 60 mph.

Tacomas are great trucks, but not known for fuel economy.

What part of the country are you in? Are you lucky enough to drive mostly flat roads?
