Telescoping panel, the perforated one slides into the other half. Something about making airflow from the bottom of the camper easier to flow up into the tent area. Spencer explained it to me when I picked mine up but I wasn’t paying too much attention since I already knew what I wanted haha

 

I like this... I gotta slow down on the shopping spree but I plan to put a fridge on the passenger side on a slide also accessible from the side door and a cassette toilet somewhere. Definitely need to figure out electric plan and solar/dual battery or something. I’m pretty indecisive on this front.

 

I feel ya there. I’ve changed it up a few times and may do it again. I ended up keeping the fridge in the cab as I have a platform currently and fridge is too high so that will be big. we need the space in the cab back. The door help retain the time to beer speeds. =]

Spending spree def needs a check once I get the X1 on and get back to enjoying it. Right now fighting some cooking issue I want to have checked off before the X1 arrives. E fan setup arrived end of the month.

 

second this and what updates they are doing/changing for 2gen. I also have a shark fin and i dont know if anyone else has been installed with one yet on 2gen. I am swapping mine out for an anderson bullet. But i am hoping i can also swap my bedrails and still clear everything.

also i have a reinforcement tailgate i need to make sure it will work.

 

Not sure I’ll do the rails. Never had issues with my Leer shell so unsure why I would unless it’s to lower the height which I may want to do.

 

yeah i have had nothing but problems, and i want to seal it all off to cut dust from coming in. Honestly dont know if ill have them in time. I am also running. A relentless tailgate reinforcement so thats another issue i be Courious as to closer pictures as too how the door meets the tailgate.

 

I wonder how that will go. Since I couldn’t get one I ended up just swapping for a mountain hatch instead. I know on my leer they used the seals on the sides and I think up front and also used some silicone or sealant. We also need to seal up each of the cubbies and tailgate. I need to redo that. if anything it won’t be the x1 is my guess but we’ll see.

im also trying to figure out my storage. I want to do some kind of case system, somthing i can access with side doors but remove when i want too and or second as bench yet open inside too. Also thinking of doing a diesel heater in the left cubbie. Fridge is already in back on a slide. Been really looking at the roam 105L case since it opens differently and has gas struts so you dont have to hold it open.

My back seats are removed for a custom platform for my 2 dogs originally i had the fridge in there but a little tight with 2 dogs now. I think i need to raise there platform up and make some custom storage slide drawers under it in the back of the cab. Kind of like what goose gear offer but just make my own.

 

Plans, you say? Oh boy, oh boy. This may be lengthy.

Tundra currently has Powertank, fork skewer mounts and Maxtrax in the bed, as well as a group 31 AGM. Some of this will change when the bed becomes more of an interior space.

- Starting from the top down, 100w solar panel/Maxxair 6k remote control fan/100w panel in a row straight down the middle of the roof, so 200w solar bank.

- Replace current Rhino Rack batwing with OVS or similar 270 awning, hopefully I can afford one that doesn't require poles.

- Quality back up camera, I'm not going to bother with a rear window in my X1.

- OVS Nomad shower enclosure

- Lots of perimeter lighting, both LED strips and probably Hella Valufit floods on all 3 sides. Also LED strips around perimeter of interior ceiling and across the top of all hatches so light shines down when you open them.

- Our fridge (huge 80l Truckfridge steel chest) will continue to live in the back seat, driver's side. Most of our personal gear stays in the cab too. The back seat of a Crewmax Tundra is big enough to land a small airplane in. She doesn't mind climbing back there for on road snacks and drinks and it would seriously limit our floor space if we moved it to truck bed.

- Solar controller is already wired behind rear seat in cab so no need to bother with that.

- Upgrade battery to 4d in a rack under truck behind rear diff. Lots of space there on my truck. This frees up floor space in the bed, lowers COG, etc.

- Probably mount ARB compressor under hood and add a dedicated tank under truck since I have space. This will free up a little more space in the bed without storing the Powertank there.

- Cut out some barn stall 3/4" rubber for a better, more insulated floor in the truck bed. I have a bunch of those mats already, just haven't done it.

- Drag the old porta potty out of the shop and begrudgingly add it to the bed of the truck. Her wet dream. My wet mess to clean out and deal with.

- 5 gallon Aquatainer and kitchen chuck box also live in bed of truck since we plan to still cook off the tailgate. I do plan on some small fold away counter on one side for making coffee or emergency/bad weather food prep.

- Chinese diesel furnace already purchased. Plan to mount in rear driver's corner of bed since there is free space underneath for intake/exhaust plumbing.

- both MTB's back to back in fork mounts in front section of truck bed (advantage: full size truck). Eats a lot of floor space but the Switchback's bed will be above it anyway except the rare times I fold it out of the way. Bikes don't go on every trip though. I don't like to store them outside.

- I am ordering my X1 with a front window but plan to remove it and put a boot between truck body and topper. Since the Tundra crew has the awesome electric rear window I can open it and have a crawl through if I ever needed, also I can fire up the truck and cool/heat the Switchback sort-of if I ever want to. Hell, it might help a little.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

 

Nice! I hear ya. With my son and his car seat it’s crammed so been wanting to get space back. When he’s not there I had a seat delete platform I would toss back there. Debated on a more custom setup as well.

im with you on the rear. I was thinking of an 80/20 setup. It wound have to open from the top so I can accessZ I was going to do that on my current but needed to swap to Windoors then the x1 popped up. Ideally it’s setup so I can remove it. That was one part of the current setup. I could but it wasn’t quick.

 

Nice when I’m not on my phone I’ll have to respond with more but I’m with you in many aspects. You def have a plus with the tundra I remember getting in one the day I bought my Tacoma. landing an airplane describes that well. Tons of space but less so on that scale with the taco.

 

I'm curious why everyone permanently mounts their solar panels on the roof? If I can camp in the shade, I will. I also don't want to have to position my truck for the sun angle. Isn't it better to have them detached and be able to move them with the sun?

 

I agree. I do both. I have a 25’ cable, Y and flexible 100w panel as well. I store it under my mattress and drag it out when needed. Takes less space than any solar suitcase and cheaper too ($100).

 

Lots of us here from desert areas where trees aren't really a "problem". With the roof mount you can charge while driving or while parked, without consideration to truck position if the camper is not set up. And there is nothing to set up with the permanent rooftop panels.

I usually camp in the shade if I can find it, although sometimes that is shade from a full moon rather than sun. I'll add some sort of awning at some point so I don't need sun shade from trees if I decide to hang out for a while. We'll see how that goes. For my rig I can't add any height to the top of the camper so fixed regular bolt on panels won't work. If I can find a way to attach some flexible thin panels to the Switchback that's all my garage height will allow. So it may be portable panels regardless. We'll see...

 

I’m looking for a good fork mount set up. If you have any recommendations besides drilling into the truck bed ....I’ve seen some tension rod set ups. I know exactly what I want to do in my head but I’m not sure it will work yet. I’d like to have the fork mount on a slider of some sort to I can remove it.

 

I've thought about a magnetic mount, but I have no idea how strong the magnets are. A quick release type deal would probably be better

 

Here's my version 1.0 plan. Once I verify that everything fits, I plan on adding an additional box for storage in the front end near the cab, all with the option to enclose the whole lower platform for guest/dog sleeping as needed.

 

Mine is not glamorous but it works. It's just the basic 2 bolt Yakima fork/skewer mounts into some sections of 2x6, like these:
