2.7 Taco at altitude

ALL vehicles suffer from elevated Altitude..........simply a matter o physics

less oxygen is available

many have several computers that work in sync

the main has a memory of sorts

ALL Ur driving habits .......good / bad the computer attempts to mimic

a V6 will be gasping for air as the 4 banger will...............U will just have LESS headroom with thw 4cylinder

any mods that decrease MPG or HP will become more apparent

 

that's cause most of the time you'll be pushing it to the liquor store

the 2TR is definitely not fast. it's also nowhere near as slow as people on here make it out to be (the 5spd gearing really helps). i've not driven an auto, though the auto has the 4.3 rear-end; the 5spd got stuck with the 3.9 because of the single overdrive.

but the truck handles elevation fine. if you're at 7000' going above 70 at +7% climb, don't expect to be passing unless you're sitting on the rev limiter in third. it's been beaten to death in the thread already, but it's really all about your expectations...

you've got to really *drive* it: if there's a grade coming up, make sure you carry speed and downshift ahead of time and then it'll handle the climb no problem. if you fuck it up, it takes a long time (relatively) and a lot of revs to get that momentum back, and this is obviously exacerbated with higher speeds... but if you *like* to drive (and not just steer), it's actually entertaining in a slow-car-fast kind of way, and not necessarily just "slow". it also keeps you a more alert and attentive driver, too (imo).

and if you think the 2GR is too slow, then i don't know what to tell you other than don't drive a 2TR – it's not for you.

 

I am pretty sure 3.5L still makes more HP and torque at 5200 and 3800 RPMs than the 2.7. That post talks about RPMs at which max for HP and torque is achieved, 3.5 will still have more hp and toque at any given RMP than 2.7.

Based on the dyno graph given in the link below 3.5 reaches 2.7 max values, ~160hp and ~180 foot-pounds of torque, at 4000 RPM and at 3250 RPM respectively. And this is taking the engine specs of 2.7, the actual specs of hp and torque 2.7 puts on to the road is lower than engine specs (similar to how a truck with 3.5 is putting up 243hp on the dyno while the engine is rated as 280hp).

Good points. However with 5k you should be able to build a turbo setup that puts out more than 300hp. I honestly don't understand why anyone would choose to add a blower over a turbo anymore. At least the blowers can be intercooled now I guess.

 

Did not see it mentioned but I really only scanned most of the posts. Have you added any weight or plan on it? If so why not consider re-gearing if that is an option. With my 80 series Land Cruiser with 35's, it is slow and there is a big debate of 4.88 and 5.29 for 35s or even 37s.

I have seen some of the Taco persons I follow on FB and Instagram run as high as 5.29 on their Taco but they have added a ton of weight (bumpers, camping gear, etc).

 

So many problems already? What problems are you speaking of sir? Those few guys that had early engine failures? Out of how many hundrends of thousands v6s sold. Some of you guys with the 4cyl think it was handbuilt by japanese samurais or something.

There are way less 4 bangers out there right. My guess would be like 30:1 ratio, naturally you will hear less issues on the 2.7.

My engine has been perfect, so are the 3.5s of my 2 buddies. 1 with 60k miles absolutely no issues and he spends a lot of time offroad.

Engine failures/problems will happen to any engine, but what is the most reliable brand out there? Lexus/toyota. It has been for many years.

 

I had a 19 4 cylinder and now have a 21 v6 big difference in power . The 4 is slow to sure . Keep it stock and you will be fine . Now that I have v6 I still miss my 4 cylinder.. and truth be told I think the 2.7 is the better engine for long term Ownership but if you’re not gonna keep a very long then I would say go for the v6

Ehh, there's a couple here that perpetuate the same thing in every 4 vs 6 thread. You're right, there's a handful of people that had an engine issue, out of the millions of 3.5s that are out there. My buddy is a factory rep that handles local warranty issues and disputes at dealers, he was also a Toyota tech for about 10 years. If he says the 3.5 is GTG, I'll take that firsthand info rather than instanetz guy who thinks what he has is better,,, just because.

what ever happened to that dude who went mountain climbing with 37" tires and 5 tons of body and blew out the side of his 3.5l and claims its a oil starvation engine design flaw and not a dumb idea

 

This guy gets it - it’s a fun vehicle to drive, if you enjoy that sort of thing. I live outside of Denver, and regularly drive in to the mountains, and do just fine, but it does take more attention and care. Because of that, although I’ve never driven it, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t like the AT 4 cyl.
