yea. Just ordered $400 worth of materials from t-nutz.

 

damn those wheels are super slick. the insane part is they are 17LBS!!!!! thats 4LBS lighter than my scs f5 which i thought were light 21 lbs 10lbs if you have the sema wheels. thats a lot of mpg. you could run 33" tko2 at the same weight as stock trd wheels. crazy!

 

did they decide not to do just the roof top tent? its not on the website?

my 16x8 zero offset Konig Countersteers weigh in at 17 lbs. Have had them for 10 years now.

 

More of an SUV thing. From what I've seen with GFC before their superlite version it was about 5 campers to every tent.

 

interesting my guess is they took it down to focus on the X-1 but i know they had a launch for it and i thought one or 2people on here ordered it

 

I carry dirtbikes in the bed. Bummed they did that. They would have been the only usa made wedge tent

 

Do you have them mounted to the bed floor or up higher?

Permanent is just easier and fewer things to worry about. Unless your truck is not moving for days, and I mean days with no sun, you get plenty of sun. My setup currently is mounted with some mounts, which I can unscrew and tilt forward or backward. I do not do it often since it tedious, but it's possible. I tried it like that and just leaving it up top and never had an issue. In the past 2 years, I only had my truck die once and realized I was not charging the battery fully due to the voltage. I added the booster and also added a second panel and never had an issue again. I recently swapped from a 31m AGM to 2 35 AGMs but have not had time to hook up the second to any accessories, so technically, it's been running on a smaller battery for a few months but stays at 100%. I recently added a

$430 REDARC BCDC1225D Dual Input 25A in-Vehicle DC Battery Charger

REDARC BCDC1225D charger. I kept my Victron controller since it has BT to keep a monitor on things from my phone, which leaves the solar input on the REDARC free. @Toynado setup his up the same and added a big Anderson connector, which you can add an auxiliary solar if needed and place anywhere around your truck/camp. I plan to copy that. The main solar power stays in place, and a portable setup is needed. I have a couple of flexible panels I did not use that I may make a lightweight. Since adding the Redarc charge has a built-in Bluetooth controller, I can wire the panels direct, with no need for anything in between to process the raw solar.

@86Scotty made a good point, and TBD, if I am going to swap my 2 hard panels Renogy's, I may buy a new compact so they match and I have more room. I was planning on picking up a flat panel, possibly merlin, that would be on top. They are supposedly more efficient than the Renogy set up, and you can get more watts per sq/in. I should be able to get 220-300 watts in the same space or more since the X1 has more real estate, but honestly, at 200 watts across both, it's been great but only has the fridge running 24/7. On a hot good day, I have hit 170 watts, which I think is pretty damn good. 120 is avg. You generally never get full power. On cloudy winter days, 30-60 watts, which is likely fine, but you would need to run at least 200 watts of panels still.

A bit of a ramble, but I was thinking of the setup. I need to overhaul a bunch of electrical and have no space in the engine bay. Really interested to see what folks end up setting up in the bed. I want to make it so the X1 can be removable and any electrical and connectors, a few people have noted. First, I need some connector that runs 6 AWG as that's is the main power source to the rear.

 

interesting. A few people also already picked them up as well. I agree; they are backed up on X1's, so adding any RTT version on top of what they already sold (which I am guessing is the minority of sales) backs things up further. They seem to be able t put a frame together quickly. It makes me wonder if the tent portion is what is taking the longest to get setup. That would also explain to them removing it for now. I wonder if they will post up about it.

 

Good points. The likelihood of me actually going up there to adjust or remove a panel is very slim now I think about it.

I've gone back and forth between a duo battery in the engine bay vs a secondary separate system in the bed. I'm tempted to do a secondary system in the bed and topping off the battery with a trickle charger in the off seasons when I'm not using it.

I think a single molle panel in the passenger side front corner would be a nice spot to cleanly mount the MPPT controller along with all the misc electrical.

 

Took a long hard look at my X-1 last night, and the front panel deal seems like my only option. I’m planning on putting mine on the passenger side, just using the last rivnuts on the top and bottom to hold it in. May have to add another on the far right if it doesn’t feel secure enough.

I’m planning on using the created space between the back window and the panel to mount my “stuff” so it’s out of view. No crazy controllers for me, maybe a house battery later

 

With all of that effort, you could just add a DC-to-DC charger and really never worry about running out of juice again. I have 90AH of lithium, 100watts on the roof, and a DC-to-DC charger on my current setup. I park in a garage during the week (without any sun) and the battery will only drain down to like 60-70% at the worst case - usually I'm moving at least 1x to get groceries and my battery grabs enough juice from the DC-to-DC to keep me satisfied. If you park outside then you'd never really drain with the trickle of the solar. Shit, if you were to be commuting to work every day, the battery would stay at 100% basically all the time without solar (you could also use a smart isolator to do this too but there are caveats).

The Renogy charger is like $100 on Amazon - cheaper than a new panel and cranks you at 20A constant....just a thought.


UPDATE: you have the Redarc Dc to DC - I'm an idiot and need more coffee. Yea you sound dialed unless you're running a welder or something - why add more solar if you don't need to?

 

The DCDC chargers are amazing. I had one in a trailer i had for a while and never needed to worry about power.

I had 200w of solar i could setup at camp, but I was overkill my needs.

 

Yea I mean if you're posted up for a week I guess it makes sense, but you can also just run your truck for an hour every 3 days and accomplish the same thing with lovely fossil fuels.

 

my main thing was really more low profile compact setup then more solar but if I can squeeze a bit more for a future upgrade then may do it. I should have gone with the larger dc dc charger in case I wanted to drop lithium in the back but all good. As you noted right now it's plenty. I will though add an inverter. I was going to hold out for RedArcs but found it's just a rebranded cotek sp-1000 (they recommended then I noticed it pretty much is identical). Maybe a Renogy or victron.

I have been trying to keep the overall COG and height down as much as I can. The bulking panels just add to that.

 

I only went 200w as with 100 during winter/low sun I finally killed my setup before. Adding the second panel just guarantees that with low light you are still getting a decent charge although low. Insurance watts is how I look at it.
