I had gotten GAP on my camper, because ya know... campers are garbage, and sold it in a year. Nice $1200 check coming back to me. A lot of people probably don't realize they can get some of that back if they trade it in.

That being said, I've never gotten GAP on a vehicle. I could have paid cash for a vehicle in the amount of GAP I've paid over the past 15 years.

They wouldn't sell it if it didn't make them money.

This. Personally I like the warranty on a used truck more than new, but that’s personal preference.

I have a certified pre-owned and opted for the longest warranty possible because I was able to negotiate it down (not as good of a deal as above). I don’t know how the truck was treated before I got it, so the warranty is piece of mind for me and I’m looking at it as a 10-15 year truck

If you do get an extended warranty, which I wouldn’t, make sure to ask for the prorated portion of the cost back when you sell the truck. They will mail you a check.

Most of those warranties only go to 150,000 miles. If it doesn't break during the 36 month/36,000 mile standard warranty it will go at least 200,000 miles. They know this when they sell it to you.

Extended warranties serve 2 purposes for the dealer.

#1 If you can't document all service they won't honor the warranty. This is a ploy to get you to bring it back to the dealer where you have to pay double or triple for the same work you could get done at an independent shop.

#2 It also is a good time for them to push repairs (not covered by the warranty) that you really don't need.

In the rare event that you do need a repair they vastly overestimate the repair costs in order to convince you that you'll be out thousands of dollars if something goes bad. Most of the repairs covered by a warranty are very minor and you could pay for them out of pocket at an independent shop for a fraction of what the dealer convinces you it will cost.

I've owned at least one car for 46 years and have a few million miles under my belt. I've never once had to pay for a major repair that a warranty would cover. I have almost 1/2 million combined miles on the 3 vehicles in the driveway right now, the the Tacoma 210,000 of them. I've spent less than $1000 total on all of them for repairs.

I have a 2016, more problems than I care for. So after new upper control arms, lower control arm bushings and other things, @ 8000 miles, I called toyota and bitched. They supplied me at no charge, a gold package, for 8 years 100,000 miles. Now I have something with the brakes that causes a god awful lifter tick, but its a brake part according to dealer. Not covered under gold package warranty. Also doesn't need to be fixed. My advice, don't buy extended warranty, and if you do, get Toyota, not some aftermarket. But wait, if you have problems call corporate and complain, and get platinum warranty. Lastly do not allow them to fix timing chain cover leak.
