Finally joined the 5.29 party. 2.7 5MT with 32" Patagonia MTs. She turns about 2250 at 40mph in 4th gear. 5th is usable at normal highway speeds and first gear is nearly a creeper gear. I love it.

I run 255/80r17(skinny 33's), I have 5.29's and the relevant OVtune file for the tire size/gear ratio. For weight I have 3 piece steel mobtown skids and Caliraised sliders.

I feel overgeared at freeway speeds.

If you never plan on going to 35s, and often do 80+ I'd stick with 4.88.

That's the problem with our current transmission gearing. Try to find someone with the exact setup as yours that has regeared and get their opinion. Everybody truck is different so you want to make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Big expense = Big decision.

This is a lot to try and take in. I just installed 285/75/16s on my ‘17 Sport 4x4. A decent increase. I drive highway often (80 mph+). Do I need to regear?

    DIY Fabricobbler.
    That's entirely your choice.
    Manual or auto?
    Does it feel sluggish?
Can you use 5th or 6th gear on a reasonable scale?

I am on the same tires and have a pretty lightweight truck. I have been undecided about which ratio for about a year but am leaning towards 4.88. It appears to only be a 150rpm difference at cruising speed though, between 4.88 and 5.29.

New to the group, but have been lurking for some time now reading threads about these trucks. I picked up a 2021 TRD Offroad. I have already ordered my lift (3.5" Rough Country w/ UCA), wheels/tires (17x9 KM101 -18mm offset with 285/75-17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers), and recently just ordered my gears (Nitro 5.29 with REM) all within one week. One of the questions that I can't seem to get answered by Hypertech or Rough Country is if I will need to flash the computer for the gear swap. I already know my speedo will be off for a while until the programmer is released.

I guess where my confusion lies is hypertech for 2020 and older states they correct gear change, speedo, trans shift points where Rough Country states just speedo and trans shift points.

If I am going to have to flash the computer for the gear swap I will be waiting to get it done until I can get the computer updated. Thanks for you help.

You won't change anything related to the gears. Just the tires...if/when it becomes available for 21.

Speedo just do the math in your head. Estimate that you're going 10% over and you'll be fine. If you want improved shift and throttle, do an OV Tune. Lots of threads on OV tune

AT but I wouldn’t call it significantly sluggish. I just feel it uphill and when I really try to get going quick. Also concerned about these tires going out quick

I thought it was going to be almost too wild for the street but it feels like it should. If 5th was a little longer and first was a weee bit shorter to help reduce the drop in RPM when shifting into 2nd, id say it feels nearly factory

The governor may limit you to ~78 mph until you can get that flashed.

I'm buying a New 2021 TRD Sport AC with MT. Do most of you guys running 5.29 also drive manual? Im die hard manual and this is solid info for what gear swap i should do. Planning on running 35s after the gear swap.
I'll stick with 33s up until the swap.

My understanding is 4.88's is for MT. 4.88 or 5.29's for AT, there is a mega 4.88 and 5.29 post where the MT folks discuss this. Maybe some MT folks will chime in and give you feedback.
