What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

hm on my late 96 it was stick on. I'll look closer at my 95. That would make me way more motivated to try and fix it.

 

Bed stiffeners installed. Kit didn’t come with enough bolts. So I’m only running 2 on the side and 2 on the bottom for now. Left out the lower bottom side bolt. My tailgate closes perfectly now.

took apart / cleaned & re-lubed and sealed my e-locker (it wasn't working) Now it does!

Two things of note:
- there are two small ball bearings on each end of the motor shaft, be sure you don't lose them.
- the motor bushings could be frustrating to people as they can be a big hassle is to hold the brushes in place as you're putting things back together. my repair is not nearly as clean as the ones in a few of these threads, the o-rings in mine were kinda shot so I ended up resealing with

$28 Permatex 85224 The Right Stuff Gasket Maker, 7.5 oz. PowerBead Can

3m right stuff form in place gasket which is awesome and also means it may never come apart again but I think it should work for awhile.

So I just found out my buddy has everything for manual swap and not the ADD route. Would I be able to use that if I use the same transfer case from the 1997 tacoma and put it on the transmission from the 01 runner?

 

What do I get for replacing the head gasket on mine?

*FINALLY* finished this, last weekend, BTW. I could have done it much faster had I worked in an actual garage, but considering I was dealing with weather, tool runs (after 40 years, WHY didn't I have longer ratchets and combination wrenches already?), work, the holidays, and lighting, I think this wasn't horrible. Everything is back in place (except for the lower skidplate, which is going to the dump, and the inspection plate.

It's like driving an entirely other vehicle now, with the clutch engaging so crisply and in a different place in the pedal stroke.

I need to do the valve covers, as they are where my leak is. Did the RMS, but would have been fine leaving it alone. Hey, while I'm in there...

Was going to do the transmission input shaft, but after seeing the fit it gave Timmy, and that it wasn't leaking, left it alone.

Definitely need to drain and fill the slave. I'm sure the fluid is black. Possibly some air in the line as well.

Inspected the driveline, all the u-joints appear to be OEM, near as I can tell, and are all smooth, tight, and have no indication of failure. Left in place, do need to be greased for maintenance's sake, though.

Center support bearing was replaced without incident. I didn't stake the nut back, just lots of blue Loctite.

But it works, everything is tight and right, and on to the next thing.

 

Finally getting around to doing the Big 3 wire upgrade, and Cadillac Alternator. I'll be doing the A/C Idler bearing while I'm at it.

 

Thanks for the reminder. I'm going to put my old S10 alternator in my Tacoma while I'm at the front end in the next month or two (next big projects: timing belt, and replace the LF inner and outer fender, radiator header, hood, radiator, etc, from a parking lot incident).... and then start a SAS......
