Well here’s the damage from yesterday, I actually got rash on two wheels but this was the worst. Officially no longer a mall crawler lol. I have a bottle of spray paint I think that will match pretty close.

@Silverspool There were some mud holes on the trails but nothing too crazy IMO. I’ve only been out there a couple of times so I don’t know my way around that well.

When I was installing my driver's side rock slider, I snapped the head off the bolt that ties the middle crossmember to the frame rail- the one that the carrier bearing sits below. There is a square nut tack welded on the top side which is inaccessible for hand tools. I began drilling out the bolt with the intention of tapping new threads, and broke several drill bits, one of which is now lodged inside the bolt. The remaining bolt is recessed, so no chance of welding a nut on to back it out. At this point I want to be done with it and my plan is to take it to a shop and have them weld the crossmember (which is already riveted to the frame) to the frame, which I surmise will be cheap and fast. I assume the bolt there is necessary for structural frame integrity and that ignoring it is a bad idea, despite there being rivets between the two. I also assume that I should be able to mount the cali raised rock sliders without that bolt hole, as there is a lot of hardware/bolts that should suffice to attach them sturdy. Sound like a good plan, or do I need to drill that bolt out and get another one through?photo5985395179244336166.jpg

With as light duty of a bolt as that is, I cant see it being for structural integrity. But im no engineer.

I agree, and im an engineer. Just not the right kind of engineer to make my opinion matter.

Thanks man. Wouldn't mind driving out your way with some brews if it looks like something I can't ignore in good conscience.
Interesting you guys think it's not that important. Might just embrace the confirmation bias and leave it if that's the concensus.

How are you breaking several drills? Corners are chipping or catastrophic failure?
Is the bolt broken off inside that hole?

It’s fixable, but I’m not sure how it got to be that way - and you don’t need to keep breaking drills.

Maybe he's using the drill bits as a chisel?

Yes, the bolt is recessed inside the hole. What would you do? What do you think about either leaving it alone, assuming the rivets in the crossmember x frame are sufficient anchors, or alternatively taking it to a local shop to get a quick weld on the crossmember x frame?

    If it were me:
Dremel or die grinder with deburring tool to flatten what’s left of the bolt. It’s likely uneven and that’s why you’re breaking drills.
Use a punch give you a good center, so the drill doesn’t walk when it starts to turn.
Spot drill for the same reason.
Undersize drill. You want the bolt to break in on itself, or give you enough bite to extract it with an ez-out.

    I probably wouldn’t weld it, but I don’t own a welder.

I was projected 9th out of 12 at the beginning of the season. I lost by 6 points in the semifinals.

You got me wanting a new one.... All I would have to do is sell some on my 9mm ammo, and a few cases of primers, and I might be abke to pay cash for one. :)

My Tacoma depreciated $10k from June 2016 to Dec 2020.

My Jaguar depreciated $12k in 14 months.

    Lol.
