The way we went through tuning is probably safe without one. We went from idle to part throttle pulls to full throttle pulls so as long as you work your way into it and don't just mash the throttle right away you should be fine without one. I will say though the turbo noises are very deceptive. When I drove it home on Saturday without a boost gauge there was a lot of times I thought the turbos were loaded up and boosting when in fact they were not based off the noises I was hearing. After I installed the boost guage I could start matching noises to boost levels or not boost level. I think it is a helpful tool especially learning the new setup.

Boost gauge is not required, but it is helpful especially on some of your very customized setups.
But I can see through absolute load calcs if boost is way more than it should be.

so I picked one up that comes with a 1/8” barb tee just to check it out. Which line should I tap? Can I just tap the boost port that came with the kit? Or is there somewhere else?

I recommend getting boost signal from the manifold. The boost at the manifold will be less than at the port. Boost / psi drop over the intercooler and piping.

on my truck I tapped the line at the back of the manifold (going to the valve cover). This see vac and boost (tap before the 1 way valve)

Just incase people are NOT installing boost gauges/wideband solely because they don’t want out of place gauges in the cab. Get one of these pods and you can either lay it in loose or with double-sided tape in the glove box. When you have issues, want to adjust boost or need to monitor something just pop the glove box open and you will be glad it’s there. It is definitely far from the sight lines of your windshield so don’t stare for too long haha. This is how I had it for a while on my S/C 2nd Gen before I went with cravenspeed pods. upload_2020-12-21_11-52-12.jpg

One thing i know for sure, there are some VINs with different suspension points. The lower control arm frame mounts are slightly narrower than the majority of trucks. Again very few trucks, but there may be other variations that caused some clearance issues for me. I eventually made some workarounds. I have the turbos in, with down pipes. everything secured, torqued. I'll have to modify fuse box to get that to fit, but I too have solid engine mounts, which if anything raised the engine. This maybe why the fuse box has become a problem. Haven't checked airbox yet but that will be easy if i have to modify. All that said, my d-side turbo is in the exact position as @MESO and will try the offset or 45deg fitting.

This might help anyone that's having clearance issues with the oil fill neck hitting turbo inlet. Toyota just glued the extension to the valve cover so It pops off pretty easy. And whatya know..it's threaded perfectly for the oil cap at the base. DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible for what you do on your truck:p

    Now that is hilarious.

FYI, if you do this and you are worried about oil fill....as long as the threads are the same as the factory cap (I assume so), 1qt Amsoil oil bottles are threaded the exact same. You can make a cheap funnel that threads into the fill hole.

Someone has to check if the bottle funnel method clears the turbos. If not a long funnel or fill neck will do

I’ve seen that too, but unfortunately it won’t elevate the issue. The 2 bolt “flange” is what is in the way of the intake. The Lexus just moves the top filler hole a little lower(works for the dual battery guys as that is what was hitting the batteries) good looking out though!

OV, I’ll be finished the install today. While I wait on a tune, I want to confirm that I can start my truck, with your pump/controller and DI on the stock tune to check for leaks.

    Yes you can.
We have a small bug in the software only affecting 04A61 ECUs which I'm fixing and then the tunes will be ready to go. Should be today.
