    Hi all,

Just bought a 2021 Tacoma recently. When inserting the key in the ignition, I noticed a ssss noise that last for a short second in the back of the truck. Anyone know what that means?

I wouldn't be able to hear it if the windows are rolled up. I didn't have to insert the key all the way. I would hear the noise as I enter the tip of the key into the ignition.

    Are u a snake charmer?

If not, is it your fuel pump? Maybe your electronic steering lock?

Could have also run over a cat? A road test would be needed to see if the sound changes.

Yeah, if the ssss increases in frequency that appears linear to an increase in mph, check for a cat around the tires or serpentine belt. Which reminds me op, how old is your serpentine belt? Maybe it's telling you a secret?

Just realized that this was OPs first post... relax, toyota says it's normal (and in this case it is).

That's normal. Just the usual gas exiting the ignition when the key penetrates the O-ring.

Welcome to the forum, congrats on the new truck.

Low pressure fuel pump is charging the fuel system is my guess. Since you said key in ignition I assume a real key, so you have a manual steering column lock. Rear of truck short whirring mildly electric sound, definitely the fuel pump.

Also, after it's been sitting a few hours, you will hear something running, normal, that's the EVAP system running a system leak test.

If it's super quiet l can occasionally hear something when pushing the key in, if l had to guess l would say it is energizing a relay.

I wonder if it has the anticipation feature on the fuel pump. Some diesels will warm the glow plugs when it detects the smart key to reduce start wait time. Makes we wonder if it's detecting the chip in the key and running the fuel pump before the key is even turned.

I have a similar sound. It seems like a pump that is pressurizing either the brakes or a fuel pump.

Those are some good guesses too as it is recognizing just inserting the key.

Manual steering? You meant manual transmission maybe?

I don't think that is priming like when you turn the key into the on position, it sounds like a quick relay the moment you stab the key into the slot.

99 percent of the time l cannot hear it either unless it just happens to be super quiet in the cab and outside.
