I’m rarely ever on the thread unless it’s truck related. Only reason on now is waiting for surgery so just passing time.

@Brian422 did your front locker come with everything you needed to plumb and wire it? I’m making a checklist of tools and stuff to make sure I have everything. This is what I have so far-

ECGS said just to use a good RTV sealant. I think 12 quarts should cover the first swap then after break in. Need to check the manual. Am I missing anything?

Morning Everybody. Light Snow possible in extreme northeastern Alabama at higher elevations. They don't expect this to cause travel issues.

    From AlabamaWX

BIG CHANGES AHEAD: Today will be another fairly pleasant December day across Alabama as temperatures rise into the low 60s this afternoon. But, clouds will gradually increase, and rain moves into the state tonight ahead of a sharp cold front. SPC has parts of South and Southwest Alabama in a low end “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms late tonight…

A few storms there could produce strong gusty winds, and there is an outside chance of an isolated, brief tornado (the southwest corner of the state). For the rest of Alabama, strong gradient winds will develop overnight (not related to rain or storms). These winds could gust as high as 30 mph during the night, so be sure and secure any Christmas decorations that might blow away. Rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are expected overnight as the cold front pushes through the state.

MUCH COLDER TOMORROW: Temperatures across Alabama go the wrong way tomorrow. We start the day in the 40s, but fall into the 30s with an icy north wind. In the colder air, some light sleet, snow flurries, and snow showers will be possible, but we are not expecting any meaningful accumulation or impact. The ground could become white on grassy areas across higher terrain of Northeast Alabama, but icy travel is not expected with temperatures above freezing and warm soil temperatures.

The sky will clear tomorrow night, and by daybreak Christmas we project lows in the 15-25 degree range over North/Central Alabama. Again, no travel problems are expected as roads will be dry by then. Then, during the day Friday, the sky will be sunny with a high between 36 an 42 degrees. There is a good chance Birmingham will stay below 40 degrees; it will be only the 12th time that has happened on Christmas Day since 1900.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday morning will feature another hard freeze; temperatures will again be somewhere between 15 and 25 degrees as the day begins. Then, we warm to near 50 degrees Saturday afternoon with sunshine in full supply. Sunday will be another mostly sunny day with a high in the mid to upper 50s.

NEXT WEEK: A passing disturbance could bring a few sprinkles Monday, but models have been trending drier with that feature. A significant storm system will move out of the Rockies at mid-week, and will have the potential to bring rain and strong storms to Alabama by Wednesday or Wednesday night… too early to know if severe storms will become an issue. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: A major ice storm struck central and southeast Virginia and much of North Carolina beginning on Wednesday, December 23, and lasting until Christmas Day morning. Icy conditions caused injuries from slips and falls and numerous vehicle accidents. Ice accumulations of up to an inch brought down trees and power lines. Outages were so widespread with 400,000 customers were without power on Christmas Eve. Some people were without power for up to ten days.

Morning fellas! Quick question - Does anyone know if ad valorem taxes are required in AL when registering a vehicle that was previously owned (and taxes paid) from another state (in this case GA)?

They charge the Ad Valorem tax every year in Alabama. I think it's ridiculous

The front diff only takes like 1.6 or so quarts. you'd be fine with 4 quarts. I used permatex red high temp. Yea i use Lucas 85/140 in all my diffs.

Just make sure when you put the breather line back on that its sealed tight. I had some leaking problems with mine that seem to be fixed now.

Hmmmmm.... so when I bought my truck I had to pay $1000 or so in taxes to get my tag... I’m guessing Alabama is different in that when you buy a vehicle you don’t pay the tax up front and instead pay a smaller amount towards it every year?

No you pay the tax when you pay for the vehicle. The ad valorem tax they charge you every year is a percentage of the perceived value of the vehicle you drive. I'd have to look but I think my 2010 is around 90-110 a year. My wifes newer 4runner, 2015, is like 140 something. This law is in the Alabama state constitution that is way outdated and needs to be revised due to inflation. They use this money (they say) to pay for road construction.

Just looked at my tag receipts. 62.32 for the Taco, 146.78 for the 4runner. Oh yea, they charge this for Motorcycles as well. Around 32 bucks a piece for both of our street bikes. Welcome to Alabama :)

Alright good deal. Any one time use parts like the crush washers that need to be replaced? Just pulled the trigger on the gears. Brute force is sending my bumper and sliders next week. I think I’ll have my hands full soon haha.

Might make sense to use the same crush washer when you fill the diff up after reassembly, then put on a new one after the break in fluid swap.

Truck used for work right? I'd say those are valid expenses.

Yeah I’ll reuse if they look fine. Especially the first round like you said- @BamaTaco56

didn’t know if the breathers have any clamps or anything. May take the opportunity to ship my shocks off to get tuned unless someone locally does that?

I would replace both CV seals while the diff is out, they don't cost that much.

Didn’t think about that. Do the clamshells from ECGS not come with any?

It does, but you will be using your extension housing, it will need a new one.
