I have a 2011 SR5 and I am thinking about getting a Detroit Gear Driven LSD. I only do mild off roading and spend 85% of my time on road. (my every day driver). Any help with this decision will be appreciated.

There is trutrac unit and a locker unit (which is supposed to let the wheels spin at different speeds when needed) The locker unit is about 100.00 more. Which is better for my situation. 85% road 15% off road. Not racing or real rock climbing.

One is locker one is Limited slipp and they work very different.
I would say for where you are (upstate with snow), truck you have (2011 with electronic traction) and what you want to do, truetrac may be safer option. Locker will lock wheels and with electronic traction control you have that may be a problem. Second in snow slippery conditions auto lockers kinda suck :D
If you are not rock crawling Truetrac may serve you much better year round.

Have you even tried what's in there now before spending $$$ ?
Try AUTO LSD in 2WD... and the normal TRAC in H4 and see if Toyota gives you enough limited slip first.

Do you have an Off Road TRD? It has the hydraulic brake booster which really enhances the traction controls (TRAC and AUTO LSD). But, since you are asking about a locker, I guess not... since the Off Road comes with a locker.

david k I only have a SR5 4x4 not a TRD. I dont have anything thats labelled "trac". So I was thinking that detroit was the way to go since it is supposed to semi lock the rear. Not really familiar with this though. My last truck-tundra trd off road worked great with factory elocker.

Its going to be better for sure but by how much you should ask few people who installed one in newest trucks that have Auto-LSD on the back. There are few on this forum so send them PM.

does the trac automatically kick in while in 4wheel low or do I have to hold the traction control button(picture of car with zig zag lines) in for three seconds to activate it

this thread details it more than you'd ever want or need!

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/te...uto-lsd-explained-easy-understand-i-hope.html

VSC and TRAC are standard on the 4x4 SR5. ATRAC is a TRD package inclusion.

Others have answered and even gave you the link to my A-TRAC answers thread...

But, you don't have a TRD OFF ROAD, so all the A-TRAC attention may haze over the other data that is there...

    1) ALL new Toyotas have the Star Safety System... which is (for you in a base/ SR-5) TRAC in H2 and H4... and selectable AUTO LSD in H2.

Now, TRAC and AUTO LSD are the same thing (almost)... TRAC in H4 and AUTO LSD in H2 are the same... limited slip without engine output regulation... one on the rear the other on front and rear.

TRAC in H2 has engine output regulation, so not as 'strong' a limited slip as AUTO LSD... or TRAC in H4.

To turn on AUTO LSD, push the button that has the car with wavey lines (called the VSC Off Switch)... just push it once, quickly. This is called the TRAC OFF Mode, but is just changing the regulated traction control (limited slip) to the unregulated traction control.

TRAC in H4 is unregulated from the start.

If you ever want to turn off all the traction controls and have open differentials so ony one tire per axle spins if traction is lost... come to a STOP, push that button (VSC Off Switch) and HOLD it down for a few seconds, while stopped in H2 or H4. The VSC and TRAC are both OFF now. They reset if you turn off the car and restart or push the button quickly.

L4 has NO traction control available to you (or any 4WDs except Off Road TRDs... that is A-TRAC). However, the Yellow Wire/ 4-Lo Trac Mod is a way to fool the computer to think you are in H4 so you have TRAC when you are really in L4... and those who have done it have raved!

Hope this helps to clear up the tons of data!

You are probably correct... but maybe he should try it stock first before dishing out tons of money without knowing for sure he needs to?

Hope he let's us know how it works out and we will know better about AUTO LSD on an SR5.

$438.00 shipped. I just dont know what will happen with the stock auto lsd. I know it is with the brakes and engine so I am thinking that I would have to hold the trac button on for three seconds until I turn everything off so that the trutrac could do its job. If anyone is familiar with this let me know.

I don't think you need to do anything. The Detroit Truetrac should minimize the differences in wheel speeds which is what triggers the computer's VSC and Auto LSD actions. If anything the electronic systems will provide a backup to the mechanical LSD.

I am anxious to see how this comes out. Might be a good mod for me, too, assuming I can find a good shop to install. Actually, I think I could do it myself except I have no experience setting backlash and preloads. That might be a bit of an art...

Raylo. Im going to have a tech that works at toyota do it. I have him do all my involved work. I figure that the truck is brand new and if anything goes wrong toyota cant say that I voided the warranty since they are doing the work. I beleive the axle has to be pulled to intall this unit. I will have them fill the rearend with synthetic oil when its back together.
