Garage Shop: Tools

I have Systainers and DeWalt Toughsystem boxes . The Systainer system is great if you have a lot of Festool stuff you want to have all your tools modular to that gear , I use my DeWalt boxes mostly to carry task specific loose tools and consumables from home base to jobs because they are tough and stack . They are stored empty at home when not at a job

The Packout system looks very robust and I would probably go that route instead of my DeWalt boxes if I had to start over

 

Curious what would make you swap from the dewalt to the packout? (i mean like what is the packout offering over dewalt for you)

 

I like the size , selection and configuration of their boxes a bit better

 

All good reasons And much better than most of the reviews of the two which start out along the lines of "i love milwaukee" and then 5 seconds later while pulling out the dewalt its "i hate this and milwaukee is better"

 

I use the harbor freight boxes that sit in a shelf I made them. It works good, but I'd prefer drawers at this point. Too much of a hassle to pull out a big box, find somewhere safe to open it, and then grab the small box out of it. I plan to eventually grab a toolbox and 3d print boxes for it like those.

 

I have nothing against the Tough System boxes , I mostly use 4 of the DS400 cases for hauling assorted gear to small jobs but I pretty much only use them for loose tools and consumables in a job specific type of way , I don't store tools in them , great case and pretty rugged for jobsite use

I like the Packouts more for the fact that they remind me more of Systainers but that they are more rugged than a Systainer and a bit cheaper too but i like the Systainers because I have quite a few Festool tools and vacuum that I tend to bring to small jobs so they are nicely modular to those tools . The other drawback with Systainers versus Packouts is that the T-LOC Systainers are a fairly small footprint compared to the Packouts however Tanos , the company that makes Systainers has seemed to have recognized that fact as with their new 3rd generation Systainer3 boxes , they now offer the boxes in the original (M) and a wider (L) footprint

Though I don’t currently own any Festool I would love to have some of their tools. I also have my eye on a Shaper Origin which has a Festool router and Systainer box. For those reasons the Systainer system has been in the back of my mind as a potential path. Kinda hard for me to justify buying into the Systainer system for a “maybe one day” tool when they are one of the more expensive options, though.

If you can get a spanner or socket back there and plan to pull that bolt a few times then they are worth consideration.

 

A couple of weeks ago I went to help a guy try and put a set of steps on a Ram 2500HD and it had the hex rivetnuts. We could not fit any kind of tool between the rocker panel and the frame. He is still trying to figure out how they are to be installed. The only other option I could think of was to fab a make shift tool and use a ratchet.

 

You can use a bolt and a nut, set the bolt all the way in from the rear and then run a nut down from the front and tighten to compress.

 

I just called him and he ended up taking it to the dealership for installation. He was afraid of damaging a new truck. I guess I can understand that but I would have tried something.

 

YouTube certainly has “homemade rivnut tool” videos.

 

That’s where I got the idea. I wanted to do something I saw on YT but it wasn’t my truck and he didn’t want to try that route. His truck, his money, his problem. I was just trying to help him.

 

Low pro ramps are awesome! Bring the truck up enough to fit the jack under the front cross member.

 

Wife uncle pulled s trick on me. Got me a gift and they insisted on recording me opening it. Opened it and saw this box.



I was thinking oh damn thats a cool gift, but now I gotta buy m18 Milwaukee batteries and a charger. But then my wife asked me to open the actual box to see the leaf blower. Thought that was weird so I did. Looked inside and saw these lol



They got me, but I wasn't too bummed cuz I won't have to buy new batteries lol. And you can't have too many pry bars.
