04B81, I think when you read the ECU it reports with two trailing 0's. And I think he's saying the dealership reset "AT" and "LV".

Nope, not a drama queen, I'm sharing my experience with TSB-0092-20 like the countless others that have been experiencing a problem of Lack of Power, Delay/Hesitation, and Frequent Shift Changes. If you don't have this problem then great but don't attempt to belittle those that are. The Service Rep said they cleared the ECU, the invoice paperwork says they "cleared memory and may help some. Transmission is a 6 speed and will feel like a sputter but it is the transmission shifting a lot. Submitted data list of drive to help with future transmission updates." TSB-0092-020 reprograms the ECU to Calibration ID: 8966304B100 / 896650410100. My truck is already at 8966304B100. This means that this TSB may fix the Loss of power, delay/hesitation, and frequent shift change for some people or at least fix two out of the three issues some people are experiencing. For me it didn't solve the one problem, delay/hesitation, I'm experiencing.

The Service Rep told me there were no open recalls or TSBs for my truck. I'll search for the fuel pump recall and if it applies I'll head back to the dealer.

Sounds pretty frustrating for sure. From your description, more likely you have a more significant issue well beyond just programming of the ECU. Hopefully the dealer can get it figured out quickly. Maybe you can talk them into a Tacoma loaner next time for a comparison of what one properly operating drives and feels like.

Update for me; Toyota of Puyallup completed the tsb yesterday after sending a lengthy email to the service manager explaining why I wanted the TSB done.

I've driven about 100 miles on it already and so far its made a big enough difference to notice.

My biggest problem pre tsb was the truck shifting into 5th gear with torque converter locked at 35mph under light acceleration. This would put the engine around 1100 rpm and under very light throttle "enough to sliggtly accelerate" the engine would lug and vibrate the interior. So in traffic around 35-50mph the truck was terrible to drive as I'd be In a Constant loop of "up shift--lug the engine--give it enough gas to make it down shift again--repeat".

The tsb seems to have lowered the throttle threshold to downshift from 5 -->4, and 6-5 at those speeds. It'll hold 35mph on flat ground in 5th just fine, but if you give it even the slightest throttle it'll downshift immediately..... As it should. Before it would just sit in 5th and lug for a bit.

The other issue as some have also said is when taking a 90 turn say at a intersection after slowing down, when you went to accelerate it'd up shift and lug the engine at a high enough throttle position that it just didn't make sense. Tsb seems to have fixed that as well.

As to burica up there don't act like a mud covered rooster up in here.

That sucks man. I honestly wonder if there is something else wrong with your truck? Mine didn't act really anything like yours, even before the update. Have you driven other tacomas and noticed the same thing?

Try driving a loaner Tacoma from the dealer so you know what the truck should drive like.

I'll check into a loaner. The hesitation/jerking isn't, knock your teeth out, it is more like a weak child kicking the bottom of your seat a few times a minute when I'm driving between 20 - 45. I've looked at all sorts of other things like, maybe a bad tire (rotated them and the problem didn't shift), or the parking brake catching on the brake drums (disconnected parking brake - no change). Using an OBD II scanner to get a digital readout of the RPMs I see that RPMs remain steady when the hesitation occurs. I don't think it has anything to do with the engine and everything points to the transmission or the ECU controlling everything. If anything changes I'll be sure to post.

That sounds like the rumble strip feeling that some folks talk about? If so, it is usually attributed to the three mode torque converter. It has unlocked, locked, and partial lock / slip lock. That last one cramps my brain, but the TCU bouncing between those modes is said to cause that.

Anyone had the tsb applied to their 2018? I noticed that my vin (CZ5AN) is included in the tsb, but the tsb only list 2019-2020?

By the noted ECU IDs, it is 2019s (all AT Tacos) and later production 2020s (about half of the ATs). The 2018s got a TSB back at the end of the MY run (04A60 to 04A61 and 04A70 to 04A71). Keep any eye on the nhtsa.gov site as there will probably be one for the 2018s (both transmissions).

You have a different ECU ID so it wouldn't apply/work on your 2018. You'd want TSB-0013-19 for the most recent update for a 2018.

thank you for reposting the VIN list. I was having a hard time finding that list on the TSB. My truck falls in the VIN range so I will be trying to get the TSB implemented after the New Year.

Called Toyota Care. They sent an email to their customer relations person. Have another appointment to have them attempt to replicate the TSB symptoms. Will update later. Wish me luck!

I had a follow up call from TC This morning.

According to TC, TSBs fall into a couple of categories.

    1. A potential issue that may or may not be present in every vehicle in the VIN range. Verification/replication by the tech is requireS as is authorization from Toyota.

    2. An issue that is universal...meaning all vehicles in the VIN are affected. This Ecu flash is an example of an issue that affects every truck in the vin range. The verification/replication is not needed...only a complaint by the owner.

The TC rep was unsure as to why owners are being turned away. Her comment was that it takes more time to check in the vehicle and sign the customer out than to do the tsb....and that once checked in, a dealer has little reason to deny service.

Every letter of that is the truth.

Not only that, but for most everyone with these ECU Updates, the benefits are real and felt. It is just good customer care to do them, esp if requested.

Although, many folks have gotten a different message from Corporate when they created cases. Mainly, they back the dealer. Just strange for such an easy effort. The only risk is the rare brickage that folks have noted at dealers. The ECUs can be unbricked, but . . .

Just updated my 2019 SR5 (from 04B30 to 04B33). Definitely can tell the difference. Driving around city feels smoother, more consistent. Biggest difference for me is highway driving. Just did a 500 mile trip to TN before the update and I couldn’t get under 2,000 rpm for more than maybe 5% of the trip (My truck is lifted 3” with 33s). Extremely annoying the whole trip just feeling the truck struggle to maintain 70mph comfortably. I drove back home from the dealership after the upgrade and I was running 1,800rpm finally on 6th gear, comfortable and the truck felt amazing.
