I suspect the blinking red led in the dash is part of that?

This is only a problem for "smart" keys, correct? My key only has lock and unlock icons on it. Not sure what the difference is between pressing the lock button once or twice rapidly but they both beep so I assume I'm safe. Do those keys also emit some kind of signal?

This was the best advise for those whom have the push button start and the remote key fob. I disable my key fob when I lock my truck every time as the key fob continuously emits a signal that thieves use to steal vehicles.

However, I do believe that those with a fob/traditional key system don’t have the same issue as those with key fob and push button start as your fob/traditional key system only communicates with the vehicle when you press the lock/unlock buttons.

I've heard about this so many times but I'm not convinced it actually happens. You can't simply copy the fob, there is a rolling code that constantly changes making it very difficult at best.

The only thing I've ever been able to find on this is a relay attack where one person stands near the key and the other near the vehicle. A duplex connection is opened and so the vehicle thinks the key is near.

There have been some scares here and there but when has this actually happened?

So happy i have the regular key.

I honestly never liked the push button start and those fancy "smart" keys. Everything is too "smart" nowdays as it is.

dosent seem to matter as much nowadays. I live in a small town and our News of Record that lists our crime on a daily basis shows that about 90% of the perps live at least an hour away. The days of gangsters and thieves not having cars are long gone. It makes sense as if I wanted to do some shady stuff would I do it around a more savy urban area or a sleepy unassuming town?

    Here is how it works.
    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/toyota-lexus-relay-attack-1.5380947

This happened to this fellow Canadian’s TRD because he never shut off his Fob.
    https://youtu.be/2tQVov0Ra8g

Then he figured out you don’t need a Faraday pouch for your Fob if you simply shut it off.

Organized crime target these in demand trucks along with other vehicles. They get put in a shipping container and get shipped out of country right away only to be seen on the 6’oclock news in the Middle East with a 50 cal machine gun mounted in the back!

I guess I'm very lucky as I live very ... VERY .. Rural. I can actually leave (At home) everything unlocked and the keys in it.
If I do need to go to 'The Big City' (Which for me would be Spokane, WA.) I just lock the tailgate and slap on The Club .. (Prehistoric, I know .. But so far so good..)
Back in the day .. If I knew I was gonna be leaving my rig unattended for hours (Say a concert) .. I used to just take the coil wire off and stick it in my pocket. Things are a lot more complicated now .. Sad, but true ..LOL!

I’ve done that on my T100 back in the day too!

On more modern vehicles I’ve had good luck with pulling the EFI fuse. The engine will crank like it wants to start, but it obviously won’t.

My current anti-theft strategy involves living in a decent neighborhood and parking everything (except for my aforementioned T100 which gets my driveway) behind a gate or in my garage.

I still really like the club as a theft deterrent for casual thief and fob signal stealers etc. Ofcourse you can cut wheel or club or fukc with lock etc but that such a nuisance to hopefully the vast majority of casual theivers. If buddy really wants your truck he's taking it regardless of any alarm or demobilzer etc but the club adds that extra layer of nusance to the common thief imo. I used one for years in college that didn't even lock lol.

Im So glad I have the normal key. I'm not sure the sr5 has any factory alarm or if even the TRD models have one standard. Mostly in my neighborhood the theft problem is cars on the street get stuff stolen from them because kids and tweekers from the city just down the hill a mile away. They walk the streets pulling door handles. They will take whatever is in there they like. Usually not a problem if you lock your vehicle, park off street like me in a parking spot behind my house, also locked. They do seem to like to scope out cars with big speakers and amps everywhere I've lived to steal.

I do worry about the tailgate a little. I've heard it is a major thing in places like California. Never heard of it here but a hose clamp on the hinge is something I should do to slow them down.

My dad had the cat cut out of his 1gen single cab a few years ago. Insurance company covered it under compressive.

Very true.... If someone REALLY wants to steal yer rig and knows what they're doing... They'll get it no matter what.
I've been using 'clubs' on various rigs for ... Well, since forever. Since you can't prove a 'negative', I can't say if it's actually kept any of my rigs from ever being stolen, but for ...MMMMmmmm, I'd say 30-40 years ... I've never lost a rig yet.
As they say 'Locks only keep honest people honest' ... A real professional car-thief is gonna get it, if they're hell-bent to get it.
Your average meth-head, seeing that big baton latched to the steering wheel ... They'll move on to more easy pickings.

It's old fashioned to some but my instincts tell me it's more secure and less complicated to fix or replace.
