So I've had my truck since August and I guess I've never really paid attention to the maintenance required light flashing when u crank up, I counted 8 times it flashes before it stops, is this normal?

It is. Eventually it'll stay solid. It just means you need to change your oil. If you already did that set your trip meter to the milage and then put your key to the on position (don't start it) and hold down the trip meter button. You'll see a little countdown start and once that is done let go of the button and the light should disappear

It's a mileage timer, just like in most other modern cars.

It comes on every 5,000 miles to remind less mechanically inclined people to take their car back to the dealership to pay for a service. It blinks when you're approaching 5,000 miles since last reset and stays on after you reach 5,000 miles since last reset.

You can reset it, just make sure you're doing your regular maintenance: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2nd-gen-maintenance-required-light.121/

Thank you fellas, I did it and it worked. I recently changed the oil so I should've reset it then, so its a couple hundred miles past due.
