    Hey all,
Need help choosing which one I should get. I test drove both but still don’t know which one is better.

    -2014 Tacoma sport DCLB w/ 52xxx miles for $25k

    -2016 Tacoma OffRoad DCSB w/ 54xxx miles for $27k

This will be my first Tacoma. I plan on hitting the trails and hauling stuff.

Honestly, if it were me I would go with the 2014 (and that says a lot considering I own the third gen 2020; which I really love). Few reasons loosely ordered from most important to least: 1st, the 2014 is really late in the second generation and later is usually better as it takes time for most of the design flaws to be worked out. Hence the reason the 2014 is considered one of the most reliable Tacoma’s and the 2016 seemed to have a decent amount of issues to start the third generation. 2nd, the 2014 has the 4.0 liter while the 2016 has the 3.5 liter. My brother has a 2013 with the 4.0 liter. While I still really enjoy my 2020 with the 3.5 liter (especially with the TSB that fixes the clunky transmission feeling), I think I like the 4.0 liter in the 2014 just a bit better especially because of the extra power in the low RPMs. 3rd, the 2014 has lower mileage and is a bit cheaper which is nice. Although, this wouldn’t even be a factor for me if the other two reasons weren’t in favor of the 2014.

A couple arguments against the 2014 for me; I don’t really enjoy the look of the double cab long bed as much. I think it looks just a bit awkwardly long. 2nd, it’s slightly older. Might be more potential for rust to have begun, especially because the story going around is that they may have done even more to fix frame rust in the third gen? Of course this probably doesn’t matter if you’ve thoroughly looked it over.

Overall I would go with the 2014 if it were me, I think. But it’s a very close battle and I think either would be nice.

what part of the country do you live in? Do they salt the roads?
My 2013 still looks good and we have a few months of winter here.

Awesome place! Visited courtesy of the Navy in 1990 for 4th July, great time. You should have minimal rust to worry about.
I have 136K miles on my 2013 and it runs like new. Great truck.
The 2016 can be good as well if the guy did all the maintenance, it is good to have the crawl control and diff lock for off-roading.
