As someone who's been in that person's shoes. All you can do is be there for them when they need it. My advice to you is next time they end up in a situation like that just give them a ride and tell them you'll get the vehicle in the morning. At some point they need to really hit rock bottom (everyone is different) and feel some pain to really want to change.

I don't mind it too much. I don't have a wife/kids, and I get holiday pay

 

Well then I'm sure your colleagues that do have families at home thank you for taking one for the team. A lot changed with me and my attitude towards work once the kiddo came a long.

 

Hopefully if I ever do get hitched, work will remember me working all these holidays
