Add me to the list of owners with rear drums that lock up in the cold. Toyota has already had the truck to replace a bunch of axle/brake components, and the problem returned just a few days later.

Got an appointment next week to have Toyota look at it again. Supposedly the dealer is talking with Toyota engineers to figure this out. That's reassuring. The platform used by the 3rd-gen was released in, what, 2005? They've had 15 years to figure this out.

I park on a slope every day at home -- not using the parking brake is not an option, nor should it be offered up as a "solution." None of my previous vehicles have had this issue. I'm not doing anything ridiculous like driving through water, washing the truck, or even driving on wet roads before parking it.

People that encounter this problem usually disengage the parking brake and shake the cable.

I believe one point being made is that a proper design using proper materials (and it is mostly a materials problem) shouldn’t have these issues to begin with.

If the parts are rusting enough in a short time or freezing frequently it is either poor design or poor materials.

Changing either would mean Toyota admits a problem exists and would need to retrofit all the vehicles they’ve sold.

If it is due to the parking brake freezing, this is not a toyota specific problem. I'm not sure that it is though.

This. My 2005 Accord has drum brakes on the rear, and never once have I had my parking brake stick in the 15 years I have owned the car. My previous vehicle a 2002 Jeep Cherokee also never had the drum brake stick in the rear either. This MN where we have all sorts of cold and sloppy weather. My truck on the other hand locks up the park brake almost every time I wash it.

I have no concerns with this issue. Sure it may emit a little popping noise but they release instantly.

Went to pondering this e-brake freezing up. If it's terrible bad, then just try backing up just a smidge. Just thinking about how drum brakes work mechanically.

My e brake locked up when my wife drove it forward once with the e brake set. Only 10 foot was enough to lock it.

Anybody ever try cable lube and servicing the brakes?

I always run into the park brake sticking when backing out of my garage, if I don't drive enough to dry the brakes after washing. I have had to rock my truck a couple times before they would unstick. Usually though, it just sticks for a moment, then releases. I try to either drive enough to dry them out, or leave the brake off after washing. Not ideal, but easy enough to deal with.

Weird. I have a 2019 DCSB manual transmission. I use my parking/emergency brake every time I park. I leave the stick in neutral. I live in MN also and have never had it stick. 15k miles

It’s actually the shoes sticking to the drums. This is a problem since we moved away from asbestos shoes. The modern shoes are metallic compound and rust to the drum surface with any road salt or condensation moisture that gets into the drums in the winter. Opening them up and cleaning them can help.

    Bring back the asBESTtos!

How do you wash your truck? I have never ran into this after driving. It only happens to me after going through a touchless carwash.

Like I said earlier, not a big deal for me now that I know it happens.

Climate change says freezing is going to end

Toyota is ahead of the curve with warm weather parking brakes.

I don’t wash my truck below 32f. A possible remedy would be to get the rear brakes hot before parking the truck. Possibly evaporating the residual moisture

Mine sticks all the time, I stopped using the parking brake because of it. But mine only freezes either after a car wash, or after slushy snow. I have found that if you drag the parking brakes for a little bit it cooks all the water out of the drums and it doesnt freeze as easy. (also in MN)

Had to put the truck in 4 wheel low to get it free

I was being mostly sarcastic about bringing it back. Don’t wish that fate on anyone. The fellas who do DPF deletes on their diesel pickups and give everyone in the neighbourhood lung cancer probably wouldn’t mind.

Merry Christmas. May it be Asbestos and particulate free.

I've been driving Toyota trucks since 1986, all five would periodically have the drums stick if I set the parking brake with wet drums especially during the winter, it's something you learn to live with or else do what I do, drive the truck a little to dry the drums before setting the parking brake.
