There is, but not sure if it applies to 2021's.

I'll throw in my thoughts. I came from a 2nd gen with the 5 speed automatic. Shifting was odd in itself, but predictable as it had a per-determined shift sequence. The new 6 speed will go wherever it feels like it. If it feels conditions are right, it'll go into higher gears immediately. This has been something that's taking getting used to on my part, and as the truck learns my driving habits it has improved somewhat. The powerband is also different than the old 4.0 so you will have to drive accordingly. We also have a 2015 Camry with a 6 speed automatic. Shifting is similar as it wants to get to higher gears as quick as possible. Leaves a little bit to be desired, but you do get somewhat used to it. Folks in flat lands have no clue how frustrating it can be sometimes. Living in a mountainous/hilly region it will shift alot.

Oh I get it.... I’m done fighting it... I normally lock out 6th gear and drive it unless I’m highway driving. Or I towing then turbo mode turns on ;-). It is a shitty feeling that Toyota made it to be a lousy driving experience BUT it’ll last forever!!

    And the fanboys attack.

Everyone hates the trans-engined combo, everyone.....

And yet, its the driver, in all circumstances, not the POS that the tacoma has turned into.

Trade it in for a new Ford Ranger. I have never heard a single complaint about how the automatic in the Ranger shifts. I have never visited a Ranger forum either.

Give the tranny more time to sort your habits, and get on the gas a bit harder when accelerating.

Unfortunately if you dislike it now, you probably will in the future as well. Ask me how I know. Every time I look at something else realizing my payment will be double I just deal with it until I get a little more equity in the truck. By August hopefully is when I will pull the trigger on my next one.

It takes about 1500 miles at least with my auto to start up and downshifting when the roads required it to. Before that i could recall asking myself what i bought:frusty:. At 5300 miles all is normal now. This truck's tranny is ultra smooth and precise.

Yeah I thought we were done with this guy when he announced he was leaving in another thread. What's that old saying about doors and butts?

To the OP, my taco is a MT however I own other Toyota's and can attest that eventually your truck/trans will learn your driving style and adjust accordingly.

I had a 2016 and now a 2021. The 2021 is a huge improvement in drivability over my 2016. In spite of the tranny issues I loved my 2016.

I never understand why people buy a truck with an automatic transmission and then complain when truck shifts automatically.

Is the truck supposed to know what gear you want it in?

If you dont want the truck to shift into the two OD gears then use S mode to lock out the gears you dont want it shifting into.

I love my engine and trans combo:D

The 3.5L is a great engine IMHO. Good on gas, smooth, quiet and has power when needed.
