It's not. Pretty much every vehicle I ever had with drums would periodically stick.

    ok

ok Uv set Ur case for what U do

if its that cold where U live.................many have a ‘ high ‘ moisture content in their environs

near lakes / rivers etc resulting in wet snow or icy conditions

over 2 decades i was a 1st responder 24 hour priority call out Fortune 500 company .........essential !!

company policy was ............. ‘ DO NOT SET PARKING BRAKES OVERNIITE ‘

the brake shoes & drums act like the tongue on the metal road sign pole !!!!!

its NOT a ‘ platform ‘ or toyota defect

under same conditions i could park most ANY vehicle in Ur drive resulting in the SAME conclusion

Okay freezing is one thing. Explain why folks in warm climates have brakes corrode sufficiently overnight that the brake and drum rust together?

Anyway you look at it that’s an extremely high corrosion rate. Odds are a change in the metallurgy would improve the situation. But as I said, doing that would be admitting a problem exists and force Toyota to correct all of the vehicles they’ve sold.

I find if I do a deepish water crossing to get to a camp spot, I can guarantee the rear brakes will be locked up in the morning.

The problem is, setting my parking brake is like a muscle memory thing. Only when I’m at my best do I remember NOT to set the brake after getting the drums wet.

I find it does this in the summer as well, so it’s a problem that can be caused both by corrosion and ice.

Small price to pay for all the benefits of drum brakes

    thats Ur reality

no one has said that it ONLY happens winter

no One has said its Ur fault

there are several scenarios whereby wet drum brakes have extended circumstances

that applies to many a brand .........vehicles........even cars

even tho i suspect some wont be doing creek crossings

its ALL ABOUT wet drum brake components...................... not realized with discs brakes

Huh? When did you and I start arguing? Just sharing my experience.

Love the drums. Single best thing about a Tacoma. If they delete drums, they delete me as a customer.

Ditto. I live in NW Ontario and use the parking brake exclusively. 16000 kms (10k miles). Never had any hint of sticking. They pour the salt down, so lots of wet slushy goodness flying around at -10 to -15c.

Ohh buddy. I'm talking about the rear brakes being locked up a couple hundred feet on dry pavement. Ain't no "little popping noise" kind of stuck.

My drums are as dry as they could possibly be. Park the truck after driving on dry roads, dry snow, cold days with no melting, and the next morning I'm dragging one of the rear tires until it decides to start turning.

I know, right? Backing up should encourage them to release.

It doesn't. Tried that. Also doesn't make a difference which direction I park on the slope: uphill or downhill.

The salt of which you speak may be preventing freezing. And since the wet salty slush water won’t dry the corrosion that does form remains in a liquid suspension.

The giant mass of salty ice/snow/sand concoction that forms behind my wheels and along the rockers is hard as stone, so I’m not sure your theory is sound...

I would recommend moving into the 21st century and getting rear disc brakes.

To think about it, the title of this thread would be irrelevant and OP would be much safer

Resale is through the roof right now, sell or trade it for something with rear discs and move on.

Appreciate the clarification and your mechanically speaking as quoted in the other post. Wow, that is certainly a issue that wreaks of suckiness then. I hope the dealer/Engineers can figure a solution for the cause. I also have manual trans and always set e-brake and agree not doing so would not be acceptable solution. Best of luck to you and hope mine doesn't develop this problem.

I use my parking brake every time I park.. never had an issue with them sticking... have had dust buildup/squeeking in the drums, but I usually pull the drums every spring doing my annual checks, and clean them out, and grease the backing plates.. I do my own brake work... and I've gone through puddles, water holes, and then parked my 2016 in freezing Maine winters, no issues.
