I mean if the truck in question was mint as in no dents, scratches or rock chips and a brand new looking frame, I could see it getting 20K maybe.
I paid 24k for my DC TRD OR with dealer installed TRD SC with 15,000 miles 13 years ago.

They only made these compact double cab pickups out here for 4 years keep in mind, and there is not a lot to choose from in this category if you are even foolish enough to look at other brands! The Limited is top of the heap in this family of rare compact dbl cab 4x4's from everyone's favorite small truck maker! We can see it has a level of rarity and desirability already today as seen by prices folks are already paying for them compared to other Tacoma's.

Price for "investment vehicles" as they age is usually based on condition and rarity, not really miles. No one cares how many miles are on the $150k Ford pickup for example. It's easy to replace gaskets, bushings, or a timing chain, but you can never go back to having nice shiny original paint and straight rust free body and frame. Paint and body work is quite expensive and most folks dont tackle these jobs on their own which can cost as much as the truck depending on how its done and condition. Miles only tell a small fraction of the trucks history and do not tell us the overall condition actually.

As we can tell by this thread (seeing bids way over kbb and folks NOT selling them still), it is quite hard to put an exact price on these things. There are a couple facts we do know to helps us all decide value in our minds:

1- First gen Tacoma's are not going to get cheaper or more plentiful down the road
2- The Limited is not vastly different, but the seats are known to be one of the biggest cons on these old trucks
3- Sport seats found only in Limited (or 2wd SRunner) are easily the most comfy seats that ever came in a first gen Tacoma
4- The trucks out there are still getting older, so the cleaner examples will only get pricier with time
5- As long as Tacoma World is online, the community will continue to inflate prices on the sought after models and parts!
6- Not many folks ever thought an old truck or 4x4 would go up in value the way they have over recent years.
7- It is only a matter of time before we look back and say "dang, recall we could have scooped up a clean Limited cab 4x4 for just $20k?!"

Beyond price tags, true "value" comes from your own usage, experience, and enjoyment. Even if you bought the truck for half price if you hate driving it it just would not be worth it to you. If you use the truck everyday for 10 years and have all kinds of fun adventures then can even sell it for close to what you paid (or more) down the road I would say this would probably not leave you with any regrets.

From my experience, if you love these old first gens then this is a vehicle you will have for a long time as again there is nothing made today quite like these old trucks to replace them!

These trucks have enough of a following to where it makes sense to get exactly what you want and the nicest one you can find and not worry about how much it "costs".

Just sharing my purchasing experience: I spent about 3-4 months scrounging the internet for a 1st gen Tacoma. I landed on a 2004 Xtra Cab TRD 4x4 5-speed manual and V6 with 135k miles. It hit all the parameters I was looking for, was extremely clean, and 100% rust free being a socal and Arizona truck. Also came with an ARE camper shell and build-out bed platform. I got it for $10,500. To me, that felt like the right price for the truck. Now looking back on it, and seeing the outrageous prices people ask for them, I realize I got quite a deal.

Paint looks great! I think you got in at a good price. I'm a bit biased, but i think you picked the best config out of the 1st gens.

The dealer has lowered their price $2k and may be potentially ready to haggle with a "serious" buyer.

    upload_2020-12-26_15-10-39.jpg

Heck , they just gave you a supercharger!

So new question.. is the new price still too "crazy" or is this a realistic starting point to engage in discussions for potential ownership?

    Stock right now.
Ill chime in. thats still pretty absurd price. $20k can get you a hell of a good 2nd gen. I sold my 04 DCSB about 4 weeks ago for $13k. & i just got my late 2nd gen for $15k with 153k miles on it. I loved loved loved my 04 but having this updated truck is so much better.

with that 20 grand budget, unless you are DEAD set on a 1st gen, go get a 2nd gen.

That’s an insane price to pay for a 20 year old vehicle. I paid the equivalent of that for a 4 year old 2012 TRD OR with 40 000 miles.

No matter now rare and cool it is, Tacoma’s are not collector vehicles. If you want to park it for 30 years you still won’t get your money back, when inflation is accounted for.

I’m pretty sure the majority of people whom buy Tacoma’s aren’t purchasing them for a bling factor or collectors. It’s more about it being a simple truck with pretty much no issues. People buy what they want. That’s like asking why do people buy new Tacoma’s at the price of a full size truck, I wouldn’t care it’s there money.

Uh huh. So you think it’s a good deal? You would buy it? That’s what the point of this thread is.

They’re harder to find because after 20 years most are rusted in half, wrecked, or blown up. There’s nothing special about it that commands a super premium price like that. Not when you can get something half as old with half the miles and more features for way less money.

But like you said, people will buy what they want. There’s also a sucker born every minute.
