I really think how much the transmission bothers you varies greatly on how you drive. I can't comment on the off-road performance but I've always had a heavy foot. I have very little patience and I drive that way. That, the 3" lift and larger tires/rims gets me around 15 mpg with my '20 and the same with the '14 that only had a 4cly. I'm sure if you don't always want to accelerate quickly and drive with an mpg focus, the transmission feels normal. For me, I use the ECT button 100% of the time and I know as soon as I accelerate from a light if I forget to turn it on. That definitely helps and as other people have pointed out, it gets better with time. I just passed 10k and as long as I have the ECT on, it shifts pretty much the way I want. So way too long of a story short, use the ECT and give it some time. I still get crap mileage but I don't mind the transmission anymore and still love my truck.

I have 58k miles over 4 years on 2017 and am still waiting for these transmission issues.

    For what it's worth ... 2020 AT 2.7 4x4 here....2.7K miles on it...
I've read a lot about others saying that the tranny can't decide what gear to be in.
Being as I have the 2.7 ... And thinking that since it's the underpowered 4 cyl and the computer is going to try and figure out the best combination of power vs. MPG .. It was gonna shift a lot (Up & down) and maybe it wouldn't be what felt 'right' to me as if I were shifting on my own with a MT ..
But so far, I can't really complain.
It could be as much of my driving is fairly flat, but I do run across somewhat steep up/down at times .. And...Other than thinking 'I would have changed gears here in a MT' .. It hasn't been anything that has overly concerned me, as in thinking 'OK .. THIS is just NOT right' kinda' thing. It may hold onto a gear a little longer that I would have shifted manually, or not downshifted to what I may have done on a stick ... But overall, I think the tranny does a pretty decent job at shift-points. But that's just me, sooo ...
I've only driven in ETC mode a couple times, just to see how it worked/reacted. Since I'm not towing anything, or really need the higher shift points, .. For me anyway ... all it does is lessen the MPG's.
My main concern was .. Even if it shifted not quite exactly to my liking ... How rock-solid is the tranny. I wanted something with a proven track record and didn't want something (I'm looking at you 'Jeep') where you know you need a new tranny every 40-50K ...

Know someone personally that had a CEL and his 3rd gen went into limp mode after about 6 months of running PC. Also you can read a lot of the reviews online that say the same thing. Hard pass for me.

You can spend 300$ more and get an awesome tune that will adress pedal sensetivity and just general drivebility. Well worth it IMHO.

Sprint booster seem to work much better and i never heard anyone have any issues with it.

    Right on.

I drove 2 different 19 off roads AT and they drove perfectly fine to me. I honestly dont understand the complaint with these transmissions. I do know some of the earlier calibrations were quirky though.

These are Aisins trannies so they are one of the best in the world, i would not worry about them. Even new HD cummins is using Aisin.

    engine size..........U state underpowered

the main computer has a memory

if U r pussyfootin around..............or the drivin U customarily engage in
has NOT allowed the memory to be definitive

im mostly hi-way................results in what little urban ido to be consistent

a Bump/ Grind 45 min commute would not allow same results

    U post U r sure the rear drums are warped...................What & WHY ??!?!?!?!?!

it sounds as if Ur driving is erratic

Man, Ov tune is a great product. I was skeptical at first but im glad i flashed my ECU.

I know i have an MT, but the truck drives 100% better. Although i had no real complaints with my stock 04A71000 tune, just always hated the dead pedal feel.

Truck has way more power and gets same mpgs as i did in the summer, go figure.

    Thank you Mr. Ov tune.

My dad has 2 4runners and 90% of the time he locks out OD gear, unless he is cruising on a flat hwy of course.

guys are doing what U say

more knuckle busting + more expense

leaving in sport mode 5th gear = SAME !!

turn higher rpm’s Everywhere only equates to Higher wear on ALL components ALL the time

No because it allows you to use 6th gear. With the stock gearing, the truck is virtually never in 6th gear. It constantly has to stay in 5th or downshift to 4th in order to get enough power.
With 5.29 ratio, you can cruise in 6th gear with plenty of power and still be at the same rpms as a stock truck in 5th gear.

Interesting, im glad its working out for you.

My buddy has 19 OR AT and drives through the rockies, i asked him how the tranny is and he said perfect. Also he said he gets good mpgs. Strange how it works for some and for some it sucks balls.

some always get the most from their endeavors

part of that success is Not stymied by PREconcieved notions

    or old used to be’s

there are quite a few posts whereby drivers have readily adapted to the latest iteration

    ive had both

i think the 5speed abetter tran...................with similar program as 6speed Ud get same complaints

    once i adapted to the 6speed ( 1 weekend )

    NO issues .............. NO complaints

i hope it holds up as well as the 5 speed............ too soon to tell

Agreed, I had a 2016, now a 2020, the 2020 is much better. I have no transmission complaints.
