And remember, theres a few different systems that might seem the same but aren't, we may be getting them confused. These are spread out over different gens and years, some trucks may have 1 or more of these depending on options

-AutoLSD is on my (sr5) 2nd gen. It uses the rear brakes to simulate a limited slip diff. no mechanical LSD in the pumpkin, completely open diff.

-Trac control uses the rear brakes to stop a rear wheel from spinning on a slippery surface. If the slipping continues it can even cut throttle.

( on my truck these two systems ^^ are shared and work together. the autoLSD isn't very robust but it won't cut throttle like the trac control will)

-Then there's the rare early 2nd gens (sports i think?) That actually had a mechanical LSD in the pumpkin

-And of course the OffRoad with its electric locker

It seems there's a misunderstanding what each function does.
Traction control attempts to limit wheel spin by reducing engine power and/or applying the brake at the slipping wheel.
Stability control attempts to keep the vehicle moving in the same direction as the steering wheel is turned by using the abs system to apply individual brakes and/or reducing engine power.
Auto LSD attempts to simulate a limited slip differential by applying the brake at the slipping wheel.
Differential lock locks both rear wheels together.

    The vsc sucks.
I've only found it good when 1st rain comes out here in this oil soaken land gets any. It helps turning corners. Other than that it gets in the way and I usually turn it off.

OP, your truck does not have VSC.

It does have ABS and rear diff lock.

It will also have a hydraulic brake booster instead of a vacuum booster, and an Auto LSD switch on the dash.

2004 Tacomas with VSC add the following indicator lamps to the dash:

Slip Indicator (indicates loss of traction)
VSC OFF (indicates VSC is off)
VSC TRAC (indicates a malfunction in VSC/TRAC system)
AUTO-LSD (indicates Auto LSD is active)

Never had mechanical LSD, but 2004's with VSC have electronic LSD. They also have EBD and TRAC.

Models with VSC have Auto LSD and were not available with a locking rear differential. The Auto LSD button and the Rear Diff Lock button don't do the same thing.

If you have a TRD Off-Road Package and add the VSC Option, it deletes the Rear Diff Lock.

    Thanks for the info
I would love to see an all original 2004 as you have described and read the window sticker and owners manual.
Sadly all I can do now is read information provided by Toyota.

Mine doesnt have that button. Like you said, maybe that was an option, but I’ve never seen one with it.

Like the v6 turbo the first year the 3.0 came out. Technically an option, but so few people paid extra for the option, that they effectively don’t exist. A ...unicorn... lol.

The owner’s manual is available online and is the same for all trucks with or without VSC.

The window sticker may be harder, an all-original truck ever more so, haha.
