Premium Audio Upgrade for less than $250

I don’t have an opinion on it except it’s expensive AF. You can replace all speakers, add an amp for the door speakers, and install a hideaway sub for less than half of what they want for their kit. For the most part, it’s all plug and play. Very simple install

As a note, I did the Subaru tweeters, kicker CS door speakers, kicker key 200.4 amp and 8” kicker hideaway sub. I think it sounds great. It’s not going to win any competitions, but it’s more than enough for the double cab Tacoma. I don’t have the gains up nearly as much as they can go without distortion and it’s plenty for me.

 

What’s up with these Subaru tweeters, seems like everyone’s go to?

 

Yeah. I think it’s because they’re plug and play. Bracket is identical to the factory one. And they’re Kicker. I didn’t want to mess with having to fabricate a new bracket or anything like that. I wanted everything as plug and play as possible.

I may be trading in my 2020 soon and would have all of the parts I mentioned for sale. I’m not 100% sure yet as I need to do some shopping to see if I think it’s feasible to upgrade.

So how does the 2020+ handle dimming the screen on the radio?

 

That wire is in a totally different connector

in the 2020+, the connectors are all different that the previous years.

The 8 speaker wires are in a small black connector all by themselves. This makes the t-harness easier to build, but also means you need to run 10awg to the battery and make a dedicated ground.

 

Might have missed it somewhere. I have the JBL premium audio package, what tweeter will I need to replace with ?

Any input on if it would be worthwhile to upgrade only the speakers on a 2021 with JBL? I had the speakers, hideaway sub, and kicker key amp in my 2020 but I’m upgrading to a 2021 with JBL. Wasn’t sure if replacing the door speakers and tweeters would really make a difference.

I think I read somewhere installing the Key amp and hideaway sub would not really make too much of a difference with JBL (and would be difficult to do), but wasn’t sure about the door speakers and tweeters.

Any input would be great!

 

Question...I replaced my tweeters with the subaru and the front doors with the kickers...I added a sub and amp in the rear of my 2019 double cab......I do not have a amp to power the dash and door....my question is...will or should I bother replacing my rear door speakers?...would i hear a difference?

 

In all honesty, it’s probably not worth it. Toyota severely under powers the rear speakers. If there was any improvement it would be minimal and not noticeable when you have the front speakers on. I’d put that towards and amp.

 

Let us know how it goes. Also just picked up a '21 SR. Didn't think it sounds too bad so far, but I haven't put too many miles on it yet. Pondering the OEM Audio upgrade when the tax refund comes in.

 

I put in the Subaru tweeters today replacing 2020 SR5 OEMs... I'm glad it was a $100 dollar upgrade, because it doesn't make as big of a difference as I had hoped - BUT it is an improvement. I installed the driver's side first and faded from left to right using a variety of songs to test them out. I'm not a huge Sublime fan, but turns out Steppin' Razor is the best song ever for testing tweeters.

Put it behind rear bench passanger side...had to remove rear panel on that side...it is a little thumper..but not overly...I think I would be interested in getting a amp for the rest of my speakers now...

 

I just installed the Subaru kickers as well. I think the clarity / fidelity of the sound is better than before. But for the sake of plug and play, 20min or so of install time (wish I had some flex head ratchet wrenches) $99 is a simple enough trade.

 

I bought my speakers off Amazon..im looking for a speaker adapter for the rear doors.....can't find the right size for the kicker 6 3/4

 

The Metra ones fit 6.75” as well. There are some snap-off tabs that allow it to fit. That’s what I’m using
