I was in the same boat as you before, but some of my buddies kept saying that carbon wheels would be the best upgrade I could make. The reason I ended up doing it was partly for the hubs and partly because you can now get carbon wheels for a reasonable price (~$1000) with a lifetime warranty.

I've tried my friends Enve wheels and they are STIFF! They're amazingly precise though, in that the bike goes exactly where you aim it. It was almost to the point of twitchy on those wheels because any little bit of steering input was translated to the trail. This is mostly noticeable on the decent where the bike has a sense of tracking a line more precisely and feeling snappy when you go to maneuver around an obstacle.

I've now been on my Hunt wheels for 4 months or so. Hunt builds the front wheel with fewer spokes and a lighter layup, so it's both lighter weight and more compliant than the rear wheel. I still notice the precision/responsiveness in the steering, but not to the same extent as the Enve wheels. They also aren't as bone jarring as the Enve wheels either. I also dropped half a pound going from DT Swiss 1900s to my Hunts. The weight is noticeable on the climbs mostly when I go to spin up over a steep section or manual up on to an obstacle.

    Merry Christmas!

Just put together a Neuron CF7 for a buddy of mine this week. It's a very well put together bike IMO, and he had zero complaints on the test ride we did on our local moderate trails.

It is way too difficult to get friends to go ride. How do you guys make it not feel like “training” when you ride alone?

I always ride alone, I always think about riding as exercise, but fun exercise. Riding more motivates me to workout during week too so I get better.

I'll still session even when riding alone. I talk to random people on trail that are going same direction as me, also I found that the people that are a lot faster than me after they pass me will actually wait for me to catch up at more risky spots. Just people being good dudes. Make new friends that do ride, join the club on strava that's local to you. Post on the FB group going for a ride at such and such time if anyone wants to join etc.

The real question is how padded will you be for spills in this freezing weather?

I don’t like to look at it as exercise. I ride for fun.

no more than normal. I’ll be doing mild trails. Especially alone.

    Nothing. Just go ride.

It’s only training if you want it to be. Otherwise it’s just riding a bike.

I always try to find an area I am least familiar with and just go explore. You should check out arrowhead and natural well trail clockwise. Pretty long descent on arrowhead that is really fun and barely gets ridden. The dirt is usually primo there.

so do you guys prefer to park at bottom and pedal to the top so you end on the downs, or drive to top and pedal back to vehicle ending on a climb?
