What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

It's all 3/4 plywood from Lowes impact resistant, 3 cans Krylon bed spray, some black marine grade silicon to cover small gaps in typical plywood areas, added zinc coated door handles with Krylon, added 4 rope loops on bottom to secure panels to truck, used 3/4 aluminum braces on side to support panels, used 3 existing holes, drilled one additional hole towards toolbox. Toolbox (not pictured) has two rope loop holders mounted so I can secure back section (one closest to tailgate) down if I open it up to load a cooler. Plus I made forward section more secure in that it can only be opened up if my toolbox top is open (thought I would make use of it). I made that back section large enough to fit a typical cooler Overall dimensions were about 57x40.75.

It's not 100% water proof but for what it cost me it is good enough to keep stuff mostly dry to a large extent. It allows me to toss stuff into the bed without having to worry about it being stolen in between trips to Autozone, Lowes or WallyMart type of stores. Granted someone could hack away at it but it would be obvious they were up to no good Tailgate has add-on key lock that at minimum deters bad folks from trying to access my gear now....

 

I got a pair of clear taillights covers, added a little red to the reflector bowl. Some red and amber leds are on the way but I’m pretty happy with the outcome.

Last Saturday, pulling into a parking spot, my 3.4L developed a severe misfire. I shut it off, went and did my shopping, and came back. Same condition all the way home (about 8 miles). No CEL. It was severe enough I could tell at least two cylinders were not firing, so I suspected coil pack.

I pulled all three, one of which was a generic replaced by the PO. Truck has 258,000. I checked the values and all three prmiary coils were above the upper resistance values, but none more than 0.6 ohms over.



Manual says "replace if out of range". So, even though I knew all three were not defective, I ordered three, plus plug wires.

I have to admit, had it been above 50 degree weather, I would have done more homework before "throwing parts at it".

I got lucky. Parts Came Thursday, and I replaced them today.

Diff Breather Extension! The old diff breather was clogged/stuck and had already caused my axle seals to burst once.

I drove for about 15 minutes, and when I removed the old breather, PSHHHHHH. I never realized how much pressure would actually build up in there. This kit is from YotaShop, includes 8ft of fuel line, a union, breather, and clamp, and to me seemed like a pretty sweet deal. Toyota Off Road Vehicle Differential Breather Extension. KIT-1012

 

I’ve been meaning to do that for years...

 

Today I took 15 minutes and replaced the sqealing ac fan.

 

If you've got local shop that you can trust, that's priceless in my book. I just have a hard time biting the bullet on having a shop do the work and then finding out wether they did a good job or not.

This is a TON of work...and may friend did most of it. Really tough to can the metal from bulging..ugh!

Some people say it takes 15 mins. I’m a little more detail oriented I guess so it took a little longer than that, but not difficult at all. And it’ll save your axle seals!

 

Your 02 should have the larger mirrors no? The 2000 and under have the tiny mirrors


I'm not familiar with what a breakaway mirror is unless you mean the folding aspect?

 

Base model 4 cyl 4x4 trucks have manual operated mirrors that dont fold in. Theyre not as big as the power mirrors but not undersized by any means imo.
