Looking for a good portable compressor

Some of you might remember my thread "kevlar my ass" where I was pissed because a screw when through my tire.

It happens and it happened again. Thankfully I was just down the street from discount tire and they patched it up for free.


I'm looking for recommendations for a good portable air compressor to keep in the truck (I was also be keeping some tire kits).

 

Personally have and use

$98 Viair 88p Portable Compressor Kit (12V, 120 Psi, Forup to 33" Tires)

Viair 88p to fill up my 295/70/17s. Works every time. Less than $100.

viair 88p as well. I really like it for the money.

 

If you're running stock size tires the vair 88 is totally the way to go. I went to the 450 for a better duty cycle and the ability to run larger tires. But it's 3x the price. Anything 33" or larger will need a bigger compressor.

 

As an alternative, if you have the money, the twin ARB is the best on the market and most compact. Lots of options for onboard air setup where it's tucked away neatly.

OP do a search for Viair 88p and you will find it is quite popular here. So much better than those crappy compressors that plug into a cigarette port.

The one in the link is a fancy one. You can get one cheap at any auto store.

 

I like the large harbor freight compressor, had pumped up at least 80 tires for me on 12 months for me no problem. However larger that 33s definitely need something bigger or with a reserve tank.

 

I just got one of these for Xmas, very impressed. Plus it fits perfectly in a 50 cal ammo can and that fits perfectly behind the back seat. I velcro'd my plug kit to the inside lid

88p and a rothco zipup bag. When I inflate my tires I keep the compressor on my floorboard with the AC blowing full blast on it to try and keep it cool.

I've been looking at this cordless/electric one from Dewalt. Nice to have for bumping the PSI up a few in the garage in stock tires.
I really dislike CORDS getting stuck/tangled-up under my tires when checking pressure in 2 cars in a garage. Haven't pulled the trigger yet though. Battery is extra though . . .

I have a Viair 400 and it’s great. Mine is almost 8 years old and still works great. It was mounted to my Jeep with an air tank and all that. I’ve since removed it and set it up as a portable unit. My buddy has the ARB twin air and after seeing/using it that’s what I want mounted to my Taco. If you want good and inexpensive get the Viair, best bang for the buck. It’s just slow but if you’re not airing down 4 tires for off roading then it’s perfect. Just keep in mind if you plan on getting bigger tires or airing down all four you might want something with better CFM and is 100 percent duty.

 

On the viair88 how long is the hose and how big is the unit?

 

I have this and it is a great little unit.

 

About a foot long for the compressor itself and the hose can definitely reach the back tires, especially because the power cable is decently long as well

 

A friend gave me his cast off 15 year old viair. No clips just raw wire to touch the battery posts and the hose was dry and kinked. It worked flawlessly and last time I saw it a Mexican rancher was smiling with it as I drove away after filling his flat 40 miles from the pavement. As soon as I got home I immediately bought a Viair300 for piece of mind while traveling “out there!”
