oh no....TSB-0171-16 Driveline vibration

So replacing the axles did get rid of some of the vibration I was having but there are still issues. I am taking it in for round 2. I will update if I get any resolution.

 

I'm curious if anyone has had flanges measured for runout?

 

I know a lot of the 2nd genners are using the Tom Woods driveshaft to solve their issues, gets rid of the spongy carrier bearing. Have you ever seen the carrier bearing in action? One guy mounted his phone or a go pro aimed at the carrier bearing, it was unbeliveable how much movement there was there. Hopefully it works for you...

 

I had a driveline guy take look at everything yesterday. The TW driveshaft seems to be heavy. The critical speed vibrations for a steel one-piece driveshaft might also be worse than the two piece. In California, freeway speed is like 80-85mph so I'm pretty sure I'll get some bad freeway vibes. Alternative would be a custom driveshaft out of aluminum or carbon, but the diameter would need to be larger and it it would come in contact with the carrier bearing bracket.

I've read about a two-piece with a CV joint being effective against vibrations, perhaps that's the way to go for some of us?

 

I’m socal area as well and I’ll probably be getting a TW shaft in the next month... manual transmission and I do get driveline vibes at 20mph but I’m hoping it’ll also fix a takeoff shudder problem.

Mine ended up having a problem with rear differential. After they fixed it I now have no vibration. So mine ended up having 2 things contributing to the vibration axles and rear diff. I have read on these forums about the vibration from the differential coming back after 1000 miles or so, I will report back if vibration returns.

 

I have a 2019 Tacoma Sport DCLB AT 4x4. Since brand new,
at 1500 rpm between 50-60 mph I get a very loud annoying “harmonic vibration” or a “whine”. Occurs when feathering the gas pedal. Sounds like the carrier bearing. It sounds like it’s directly behind the drivers seat.
Also between 25-30 mph but not nearly as bad.
2 dealerships & corporate blew me off.
“All the Tacoma’s like yours do that whine & yours is louder because you have a Leer shell on it.” I even hired a lemon law lawyer & corporate blew them off. Now I’m waiting to see if the lawyer feels it’s worth filing a law suit. I’m not optimistic.
Has anyone experienced this & found a fix??? HELP!

 

Same damn response I got from the Head tech at Toyota as well. I have noticed that the vibration only happens at when I brake at the speed of 15mph and only when I first drive it for the day then it does not happen as much after that. Still bugs the shit out of me.

 

I hired a Lemon Law lawyer & so far, Toyota has blown them off too. No upfront settlement yet. I may take them to court!!
They have a big problem with these inherent vibrations that they refuse to address. I’m not giving up!!

 

I have this exact same noise, 2019 OR 4x4 w/8k miles. 50-60 mph, not giving it gas but not off the throttle decelerating. I haven't taken it to the dealership yet after I noticed the noise because they're not offering loaners right now.

 

Call corporate & tell them you are seeking legal advice to Lemon Law the truck.

 

To all the folks that added "permanent" extra weight to the back end of your trucks (like a steel rear bumper), are you still feeling the vibration under light throttle @ 48 -52mph ?

 

I have a 2019 Tacoma Sport TRD Club Cab 4x4 3.5L AT with 13K & a 180lb Leer camper shell on my 6’ bed. I get a severe “harmonic vibration” or “whine” behind & under the drivers seat between 50-60 mph at 1500 rpm.
2 dealerships & Toyota corporate refuse to even attempt to remedy. I’m told ALL Tacoma’s with the 6 speed AT make that whine & mine is actually worse due too the shell.
“Nothing here...move along!”
I’m going to sell the piece of s#*t!!

 

Chazini - There is a TSB for the whine noise at highway speeds that was issued a few years ago . . . I suppose the camper shell on the back is your "permanent" weight, which obviously didn't fix your issue - perhaps silly question, but do you think most of that 180lbs is forward or aft of the rear axle ?

Would still like to hear from others that have added "permanent" weight behind the rear axle, and if it made the difference.

 

The weight is dispersed equally over the 6’ bed. That TSB is for 2018 & older.
Unless you know of another one.

Okay, I'm trying to decide if the vibration that I'm experiencing is related to this or totally different but the dealership said it was "normal" - but I don't think it is:

At 5,100 miles when I purchased my truck I'd push down the brake pedal about an inch and get a glitch/click feeling and then it would keep going. Basically just felt inconsistent and not smooth. Took it into my local dealer and they said that I needed a new brake main cylinder and assembly. A couple weeks later they replaced those parts. When I picked up my truck I drove it around and the glitch is gone but now I experience an electronic feeling vibration in the pedal for about a second or two when pushing the brake pedal down. Literally feels like I'm stepping on a ringing cell phone on my pedal. It happens in the parking lot at 0 mph and out and about driving - doesn't seem to be speed related. My truck isn't vibrating anywhere else (no body shuttering etc), just in the pedal for a consistent amount of time that feels electronic. Right away I drove it back to the dealership and they didn't think it was weird (it was 5:30pm...thinking they're being lazy). No codes came up and no lights on the dash. I just want to drive a truck that doesn't have weird pedal feedback. It makes me feel like the ABS is on on dry pavement or something. Any ideas?

 

fromTacoma - I might believe the buzzing feeling in your brake pedal is somehow pedal pressure/ABS related, which (no offense) may possibly be listed in a thread elsewhere on tacomaworld.com . . . this thread deals with driveline vibrations at low speeds and highway speeds.

 

Thanks, I'll keep questing for answers. I was thinking possibly ABS as well.

 

I put five cinder blocks (@ 190lbs total) in the bed against the tailgate - didn't change my 49mph vibration at all, but made my 28-31mph worse.
I'll try adding a few more (@ 300lbs total) in next couple days to see if any difference.

 

2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport bought from Heritage in Burlington Vermont. Had a high pitch coming from Diff. But in December, 802Toyota in Montpelier replaced the Diff and Drive shaft. Now it is a vibration mess. And they said too bad, live with it. Sadly, It was beautiful before. New tires and Drums. No affect. So it is something serious that Toyota caused.

Truck is now being worked on by the head mechanic at Heritage Toyota in Burlington, Andrew. He is a smart guy. We’ll see. They are a bigger shop, more techs, and more smarter team. They call themselves the H-Team.

I’ll let the forum know how things are going with Heritage Toyota. Let’s see if they have a can do attitude.
