Before I buy: What is the current consensus on the 2017 TRD Off-Road?

I am headed to the dealer tomorrow to look at a 2017 TRD Off-Road and was hoping to get a sense of the current consensus of that make/model/year. I see a lot online about the transmission, though much of that discussion seems to be a bit dated.

This would be my first Tacoma so I wouldnt be able to compare it to prior years. My expectations of the truck require it to be a decent daily driver and hold its resale like prior gen Tacomas. Is this a reasonable expectation, and what should look for/test out before buying the specific truck I'm looking at tomorrow?

Keep an eye on the 3rd brake light leak...if I remember right those were the prime year for that. Check the headliner/backseat area for signs of previous water damage.

Take a 75 mile test drive up and down hills and on the freeway. Make sure it shifts to your liking. You don't want to be one of those select few.

They're more or less the same mechanically as any other year. It's really only features and options that would be missing. I just bought a 2017 in june and I can't say i am missing TSS or any of those features. Most other things can be added aftermarket

I have a 2017 TRD sport. I know suspension on the off road will be different and have a couple features I don't have.
I came from a 2002 dodge ram 1500 5.9 magnum V8. If I had a choice between the 2 right now. I would take the Tacoma. It has all the power I need and the features I want. The only real thing I miss from the ram is I sat higher and I like the seats better in it. But overall. The Tacoma is a great truck.

My opinion, it's the best option of the 3rd gens. No TSS and it has the large storage cubby on the driver's side of the bed. I love mine! Zero recalls on mine either, including repaired recalls. Plus, Crawl Control isn't nerfed like some have mentioned with newer models.

If it's a Toyota dealer that is selling, verify that the ECU is updated to the latest version and that will greatly improve the drivability and transmission silliness. If it's not a Toyota dealer, but there is one nearby, you can see about them updating the ECU as part of the deal, though it's a free service so you could always do it after buying. Would be nice to drive it after it's updated to be sure it's to your liking.

I think 17 was a good year. But I have one, might be a bit bias ;). Glad I don't have to bother with the TSS nonsense that came with 18 and up

Watch out for this! They did have a recall for the 2016 & 17 but my 2018 had this issue that was supposedly fixed.

Mine did have this too. They replaced the whole rear diff housing when I brought it in free of charge. I've had no issues with my 3rd break light.

You really really need to take a test drive or three to make SURE you like it. Drive it at 70 on interstate. Get in the back seat. Pay attention to how it shifts.

As a general rule I never listen to people who think laminar > turbulent flow. :D

Go team turbulent flow! But in all seriousness, that is good advice. If you've been on the forums you know about the shifting issues, and that's going to be across pretty much all the 3rd gen years as far as I know. There's a TSB that helps a little, but unless you want to include Ovtune in your over all purchase price, you'd better make sure any gear hunting/shifting it does doesn't bother you.
