Rear Recovery Points for Tacoma

Does anyone know what the best rear recovery point is for my 2019 Tacoma BESIDES the hitch receiver? The hitch-mounted shackle would be a great option, except I usually travel with bikes on my hitch-mounted 1Up rack. I’d prefer to find a rear recovery point that wouldn’t involve removing the bikes/rack.

Not afraid to drill into anything, but I don’t want to hinder my warranty or alter the structural integrity of my frame.

Behind under the truck in the back there are two holes on the frame and the off road comes with a hook in the front, other models come with a loop thing.

Welcome to TW, I replaced my OEM bumper and hitch and went with a RCI High Clearance with shackle rings, but even with that, I would still need to remove the bikes to get a yank. How do you like your 1Up Bike rack? I have been eyeballing them, my Saris rack sucks, but I'm not quite ready to part with the $750 they want for them.

This may sound flaky, but why not put a small shackle on each of the safety chain plates and loop an endless thru the 2 shackles. You'd want to pull from the sling so you're loading both shackles more or less equally.

Because you will fold those chain hooks like nothing.

If you get stuck with a bike carrier... remove the bike carrier and use a hitch mounted recovery point.

 

I've spent hours in the heat, 110 plus, getting out when stuck. Removing some bikes and a hitch mount rack seem like an after thought to me.

 

These are the other two holes on the back of the truck, but they don’t look strong enough for recovery. Are there additional ones I’m missing? If you can include a photo that would be great, thanks!

 

Good to know, thanks! Seems like I might just need to remove the bikes and use the hitch receiver for the safest recovery with a stock bumper. Not the end of the world, but I’m keeping my eyes peeled for alternatives.

The 1Up is amazing! I came from a Thule T2 and was hesitant to spend the money, but couldn’t be happier with my purchase. I carry all kinds of bikes (road bikes, mountain bikes, electric mountain/commuter bikes) and never have fitment or rubbing issues, even when mixing different bikes. It’s designed to have better clearance than other racks and is insanely stable on rugged terrain.

 

Seconded on the 1UP bike rack. I had a Saris 4-bike rack that I sold when I found 1UP, much happier. They fold up small for winter storage unlike the Saris. I have the dual rack also and 2 individual add-on trays for when I have 4 bikes. I will say it gets awful heavy hanging off the back of the truck with 4 mountain bikes on it. If you have a topper, platform for sleeping in the back, and perma-1UP rack on the back your rear springs are going to get a little saggy in a year or two.

 

you could try a double receiver hitch adapter but i doubt any will have the load capacity for recovery.

 

There really isn't anything better than the hitch. You could maybe sling something around the hitch itself or the frame rail, but you'll risk damaging your plastic bumper caps from the strap hitting them. I would just have the hitch shackle receiver handy and plan on swapping it in in case you get stuck. The minor inconvenience of that will be nothing compared to damaging your truck from an improper recovery point being used.

 

Steelcraft Rear Bumper maybe? I have one on sawhorses. I'm still on the fence about it because of how low it hangs, but may modify it by cutting off the 1/3 skirt end light cutouts, but leave the tow points.

I think you are better off removing the bike rack and installing a receiver shackle as needed. Are you really getting that stuck that often that taking the bike rack off is a PITA? I don't have a bike rack, but I keep a receiver shackle inside the cab. It only takes a few moments to hook it up. The only alternative I know of is an aftermarket bumper with recovery points, but they are $1000+.

 

AFAIK that point in the front (whether it is the tow hook on the Off Road or the Loop on other models) is not rated for recovery and is only meant for towing.

Something like this would work and save a couple minutes unloading the bikes and carrier if you needed it.

 

I'll bet that Toyota has some sort of bracket in mind (either OEM or aftermarket) that would use that elongated hole plus the 4 bolts immediately above it. Notice that the flange has a gap in it that would allow this hypothetical bracket to lie flat against the frame. Five heavy bolts would make a strong attachment. Stronger than, say, the Demon bracket that many of us are installing at the front.

 

Good idea! I personally used that hole for my air compressor chuck

 

Maybe not officially rated but the hook side of the OR models is plenty strong for recovering. There's loads of us who have routinely recovered off of it and I've yet to see a single reported failure.
