The samurais actually make like half that power. I have one with a big carb and headers and I doubt it makes 70HP. I'm only on 30s though.

I live up in the hills where every yokel has something like that. Wouldn’t want to daily drive an underpowered trail rig.

LOL ok so yes the stock samurai with the carb makes about 80 hp tops however I’m so used to everyone putting in the 1.3 EFI from the sidekick so I just assume everyone has it.

I went harley carb. Mine's a 44mm screamin eagle too so she gets a lot more fuel in there, but the tiny gas tank really suffers. I don't ever plan on bigger tires so no reason to swap!

I have similar wheeling habits as you. I run Fox 2.0 front and rear. Cost (self-installed, so no labor) about $1100. They run great, give me about 2" of lift (8 turns up on driver side, 6 on passenger) and suffice for the light to mid-range wheeling I occasionally do.
I previously had bilstein 5100's and they were a bit tight.

    All of them.
I have a fox setup from you guys. Currently waiting for my rears back from a revalve. Been dealing with Tyler on the revalve and Alex for the initial sale. Definitely one of the best companies I've delt with so far. I recommend you to anyone with suspension needs.

If you're going long-travel or Baja racing, then that's already far beyond what were talking about here.

Even if the truck is street drive 100% of its life, you will still feel a big difference in handling performance and control of your vehicle. Maybe you live in Europe or Japan where they actually maintain their roads but here in the good ol US of A we have to deal with 3rd world country road conditions. Pot holes , rail road tracks , rollers on the highway from sinking ground , debris in the road , poorly designed on ramps, intersections with deep drainage ditch , “non county maintained rds” , towing things , sudden stops & more unsprung weight, are all reason a 4,000+ lbs truck should at the minimum have 2.5”‘shocks set up correctly. When it comes to suspension setup and tuning, 99% of car guys are absolutely clueless. Your body is constantly feeling the suspension . The best return on ur investment to performance will almost always be suspension mods to what ever car, truck , motorcycle , mtn bike or even snowmobile lol.
The only exception I can imagine is a dedicated rock crawler that never goes past 15mph and ur broke.

    I just can’t see a mostly street/light off-road application needing more than a $1,200 6112 kit.

you want to have 20 inch fake bead-locks, 12 light bars, and king suspension? Go ahead. I just think it’s overkill other than Instagram influencer pics.

The people telling you not to are too cheap to put a good suspension system on their truck and try to make themselves think their set-up is as good as somebody that actually invest in real suspension. Just make sure you use a reputable company!

Bro. People need stage 3 icons to go back and forth from Home Depot daily and off-road twice a year?

Good thing for you, no one here is...

This pretty much sums up that you lack the experience to really provide an educated opinion on the subject.

The OP is thinking of 35s and wheeling in CO..if he ever went wheeling with us he would probably be disappointed in a $1200 setup.

As someone who lived and wheeled in co for 4 years I can assure you you’d be just fine with 6112’s and 5160’s in the rear. But if you want to pony up the extra dough then why not. I think you would notice a bigger difference on the higher speed trails though. To me the desert is where kings, fox and the new 8112’s really shine. Even with the nicest fox setup, in the rocky trails in Colorado you’ll still be forced to crawl.

I off road 3-4 times a year, so I am experienced at that level. Better tires, and practice/better skills, did more for me than any suspension kit could.

you want to spend 4-6 thousand dollars on something that will rarely get used. go ahead.

i put 4,000 dollars into Tesla earlier this year and now I have 8,000 dollars. you/OP will have a $4K suspension kit that will never be used to its fullest ability, and will be worth zero dollars in a short amount of time.

I am not expert at suspension setups, and I freely admit that. However, I am a board certified financial expert, and I think spending more than $1-2K on suspension kit is financial foolishness. Especially on a relatively brand new Tacoma.

Dude nobody cares you’re a certified financial expert. OP asked for suspension advice not financial advice. If you push your truck hard enough to warrant fox then that’s enough reason to upgrade.

Why are you projecting your limited experience on to others?

I get that YOU don’t need it for what you do but why try to dig your heels in on a debate you really have no business in...provide an opinion yes, but let it go.

I put my suspension absolutely to the fullest to the point where I added 12" shocks.

As far as zero dollars. Well I bought my original king shocks for $750 and I sold them 3 years later for $750, sold them in about 14 hours and could have gotten more if I cared to. Thats a win for anyone in the aftermarket world

As far as financial expertise...well a suspension is hardly something financial experts give advice on regardless of cost.

I am trying to save the OP from wasting money on unnecessary items.

I fail to see why the OP or 98% of Tacoma owners need anything more than 6112s/5160. Nobody really pushes their truck hard enough for that.

you explain to me how a low speed moderately technical trail needs anything more than upgraded tires and extra ground clearance.

it comes down to what is practical for the OP and the majority of the Tacoma owners. Not cry-once-buy-once, YOLO or “you never know when you might need it” reasons that are used to push people in to purchasing unnecessarily mods.

I have never driven Colorado, but I have watched multiple videos of black bear pass and other trails. I don’t see how a stock vehicle with upgraded tires could get through those trials. You tell me. I’m not the expert.

I have been stuck, and I gotten myself in some sticky situations on trails. I don’t think ever thought to myself, “if I only had $7K King suspension kit, I wouldn’t be stuck here”. No. I thought about a wench, a front locker and better tires.
