Well since I posted here way back in February I now have 18,100 miles on my 2020 OR and it’s still doing the same thing. It’s an annoyance for sure and in my case it’s not “learning” how I drive and adjusting.

If it wasn’t for the fact that it seems like I actually average between 40-50MPH, where it happens, I wouldn’t care as much.

love everything else about the truck.

Traded in a 2018 ORSB for 2020 same. Total night and day difference. Both were bought used with under 10K miles. The 2020 drives like a completely different truck comparatively and much, much more enjoyable. Zero of the issues I had with the 2018. Maybe previous owner had it tuned but now I make excuses for reasons to drive it.

@SeanDP You're not imagining this. I have the exact same thing about about 1200rpm between 40-50mph. Feels like a bumpy road.
I'm at 2000mi. I plan to ask about it at my first service.

Hate to revive and old thread but man there is some stuff going on in these 13 pages....

Was this under T-SB-0092-20 that you are talking about?

Adding onto this above question: What happens when the cruise is briefly turned off and then back on? Does the tranny upshift when the cruise is turned off and then keep gear and rpm when its turned back on?

Do you know which firmware version you are/were running in your 2017?

Do you have the TSB 0058-18 flashed into your 2018?

My 2018 holds the lower gear for longer than 5 seconds sadly when downhill coasting after an downshift when in cruise.

Do you know what firmware you are running in the TCU?

So having read all the post's and asked the above for clarification here is where todays question comes in:

I assume all the 2018-2020-2022 3rd Gen Taco's are the same in terms of engine and transmission with maybe just some slight variations and improvements? I had back in the day complained to the dealer about transmission gear issues and surging when driving. They had flashed the TCU with TSB 0058-18 and the truck drove a bit better on the interstate but was still not fully right.

When driving on the interstate at 70mph with the cruise on the transmission would downshift and hold the gear during slight inclines which is fine but it would either never upshift again or upshift after half a mile or longer. Drove a 99 Corolla back in the day that had the same issue when the cruise control was used on interstate cruising: once it downshifted the transmission would stay in lower gear and NEVER upshift until the cruise was turned off and then back on to the same speed.

The same applies to the 2018 Taco: Either wait for an eternity for the transmission to upshift after it has passed any incline or turn off the cruise, let the tranny upshift which it does immediately and then turn the cruise back on for the transmission to stay in the upshifted gear and keep rolling until the next incline comes. This has been my method of dealing with it for a while; during the last service in 2019 I was bringing the truck in and complaining again with the above statements and a Toyota TAS case was opened under Case #191090360 since it was now struggling to downshift when driving in regular traffic. Was told this was a normal behavior.....

So now 3 years later I am wondering if there is a list of TCU firmware versions somewhere that I can lookup before going to the dealership to complain about the shifting issue again and my right cards played. It took my last Toyota dealer a printout of a TSB to fix the Sienna's intermittent steering wheel button illumination after complaining about it for 2 service visits and they said the buttons are not illuminated.

Found the TSB pdf for the 0092-20 TCU flash for the 2019-2022 versions here but have no idea what else is out there for the 2018.

Here is an old post for the 2018 known TSB's https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/ecu-tsb-update.562550/
It mentions TSB-0013-19 Rev 1 -- 2016 through 2018 MT and AT Update plus several other Toyotas
    Includes Mexican Market ECU IDs

Not sure if that is the latest and "greatest" for a 2018.

Agree with this. I love my auto and I don’t find that it hunts for gears.

Whenever I want to “row gears,” I do it on my motorcycle.

Came here to research this exact same behavior, bought my 2019 2 months ago and I was losing my mind on a 12 hour trip to Dallas, the cruise was wrecking my mileage. West Texas is about as flat as it gets, and it stayed at 3000 rpms for a good minute or two after topping any slight rise.

My buddies 2019 trd or was the same. Truck seemed to produce less power than my 2020 sr5 with the same motor and auto. It drove him nuts. Its more hilly here in new england than texas. I have 0 complaints with my 2020 truck. Doesn't hunt at all like it did when brand new. Cruise control works fine, but we don't have speed limits like you guys got. I set mine at 75 max when on the interstate....thats already 10 over.

I had gone on a 40 mile test drive with one of the service advisors showing him what issue I have when I have to cruise control set to 71 mph how the truck constantly downshifts and then holds its gear for 2 miles before it up shifts again. One of the service texts drove it as well scan for coats we looked at firmware upgrades for the TCU ECU etc. Everything was up today then it is expected behavior. This was the third time I had taken the truck in for the same issue or mention the same issue.

I don't experience none of that. Only time the truck will downshift is to keep the speed the same going up steeper grades. My tundra cc was the same.

Did you look at the ecu id your self to confirm your ecu was up to date. My local techs did the same thing to me said everything was up to date. But once I did my tunings myself I needed to make sure I was up to date and sure enough I wasn't. The Kdmax tunes does fix the highway hunt to if you haven't tried that. Find a tuner they will update you for free plus a tune sensitivity you want.

My current ECU is 04B3100, and I took a printout of the TSB for 04B3300 to the dealer but "they can't replicate it" on a five minute drive around the block. I just picked up a used VF Tuner cable so I will flash it myself and hope that it helps.

Well, I live in Colorado Springs and was driving to Dallas, so it has seen plenty of steep terrain. I mean after going up ANY slight rise, it holds at 3000 RPM for a couple minutes. Will see what the updated flash does for it.
