35s on IFS?

Hey guys, I have a 1st gen stock rn but I have been obsessing over HBTACO02’s build. He had 35s with on kings I haven’t read the rest of the details. Can I get some thoughts on 35s with IFS and no I’m not planning to do hardcore rock crawling just casual off-road trips to camp and go to the snow. Btw his account hasn’t been active since 2k16 so I can’t ask him.

Cv axles will be ok? And diff?

 

You can fit 35's with some cutting and bashing - assuming you get the right wheels and lift, etc. Fitment of various tire sizes is pretty well covered here:

You'll absolutely (obviously?) be putting more strain on the CVs, diff, LBJs, etc. All of the driveline components really. And suspension of course. You'll need to be aware of that with your driving style. Plenty of folks on here run 35s - some with more success than others, largely due to proactive maintenance and driving style.

 

Free wheeling front hubs or regular CV service/replacement.

 

35s are what you put on when you do serious offroading. Dirt roads are sufficiently handled by 31s

 

People do the Rubicon on 33's. Few people actually "need" 35's, especially for what you describe your driving to be like. Most people don't even need 33's.

35's are just more cutting, more lift, more expense, more wear and tear, less mpgs.

Have you even tried driving it off road in it's current state?

 

Have had 35s on my Xterra since 2009, ifs. It was fine, had to trim, some parts will wear out faster, but they kept me from banging my skid plates too much when off-roading. I get excited to drive something that gets more than 12 mpg too.
Personally, I think Kings have become more of a status symbol than a need for most that have them. Over priced for a daily driver imo.

 

I can tell you that Kings, while shiny and pretty, are hardly "just a status symbol". Their performance is light years ahead of oem or any of the "budget" shocks likes 5100s or OMEs.

I agree they're over priced for a daily driver, unless you also use your daily driver off road and want good shocks. I didn't put Kings on my truck until after it was no longer a daily driver. But lots of people wheel their dailys pretty hard, and thereby want good suspension.

Of the people who have Kings, or Fox, or Icon, etc..., I think it's pretty easy to tell who has them for performance, and who has them for status. When it looks like they own stock in Armorall and their powder coated armor matches their roof rack and maxtrax brackets, it's probably a status symbol.

 

I would stick with 33s unless you're willing to do a lot of work to fit them.

With stock 3.91 gears and the 5 speed I never made it past 3rd gear unless I was going downhill.

Even doing "easy" trails i have still broken CVs and axle shafts but YMMV

I’d start there, for sure.

No reason to go down the 35 route if you’ve never even taken it off road to know what it can and can’t do as is.

These trucks are more than capable enough to get you in plenty of trouble with the stock tires.

 

Okay. Thank you for the advice I’m trying to gather up a group to go with that way I don’t go alone and get stuck but with work mon-fri it makes it difficult

 

Where are you located? There are a lot of people here always willing to go out wheeling.

Might look to see if there is a 4x4 club nearby, too. Clubs aren’t all rock buggies and crawlers.

You’re definitely on the right track though, going alone is generally not the best, especially for novices. Not just for safety reasons, but because you can learn from others. Even if they are novices, too, you can still bounce ideas off each other.

If you're wanting to get into off roading, the best way to spend your money is as follows.
*Edit for those who don't understand*
Start with the top of the list. After wheeling it, move to the next.
1. Lunch box locker rear (because it's cheap)
2. Tires with better traction (this doesn't mean bigger)
3. Armor
4. Gears and better lockers (because the first one was cheap)
5. Suspension upgrade (now bigger tires)
6. Duel cases (for technical stuff)
7. Super charger
8. SAS or LT (depending your style)

Take it from an old guy that's spent a small fortune on this addiction. Also, learn to do the work yourself. I can't tell you how many people go out on a trail and break shit that they have no idea how to fix. Trust me, it's a lot easier to learn where stuff is and what you can expect in your driveway than pulling it apart for the first time on some trail.
