Getting spare down without special tool?

I just discovered my newly purchased truck is missing the "tool bag" with the jack handle in it. Is it possible to get the spare down some other way?

Also, anyone have an old Toyota jack tool kit they don't need anymore?

How handy are you? It’s a flat piece on a long arm.

 

I could weld something up, but I've got a lot of projects on my plate. Just need to prioritize.

 

also depends on if you need the key or not. mine has a special adapter that goes on the end, similar to a lug key.

 

Last time I had a flat I had a hell of a time getting the rod engaged into the lowering mechanism. It was extremely bright outside on the shoulder of the freeway and it took me probably a half an our until I finally got the hook end into the slot. My flashlight was useless. Anybody else have this issue or was I missing the obvious?

 

I have this thing too but I don't have the key for it. I bought a new spare tire carrier but then its super hard to get it on because you gotta take the whole bed off. IDK what to do on this one.

 

The setup is a bit "fiddly" for lack of a better, kinder term. Practice helps. My method: first I look into the hole to see the orientation of the slot. (This can be done in bright light if I let my eyes adjust and/or use a strong flashlight, but also I might need to press my face up against the tailgate and cover the eye I am not using. Yes, it sucks.) Then I attempt to slip the tool through the hole without snagging it on the partitions, and get it into the slot. I keep looking into the hole as I do this. Once it hits bottom... If I try to turn it and it resists too much, I got it wrong. If I try to turn it and it resists a little and then turns with slight resistance, I got it right. I *make sure* to keep the tool inserted into the slot until I am completely done working with the spare... I don't want to have to try finding the slot again lol. Also, it sounds like you are not including the spare in regular tire rotations. You might want to start doing this.

 

The "lock" is an accessory available from Toyota. I have one also.

 

you think it’s better to just go and try to buy one from them than replace the whole system?

 

Maybe you could download the instructions from a toyota accessories site and figure a way to uninstall it. The lock is just pressed into place. You may be able to pry it out.

 

I used a short needle nose pliers and used it as a lever. I reached in from the bottom from under the tire and got an arm in between the tire and frame.

I'm relatively flexible and that was a pain in the butt. I wasn't going to delay getting my full size spare tire mounted and throwing on some paint to match the current wheel color

 

I drop my spare every year , lube the cable up , lube up the tire , clean above where the spare sits as its famous for rusting out and I flipped the spare over so the air valve is accessible . Nothing worse than the dam low tire light popping up on the dash and you cant top off the spare tire with fresh air without lowering the tire .
A wrecking yard would have hundreds of those kits

 

I use one of these to go through the access hole in the rim. (It’s bigger, look at the photo above of the rim where the stem is located)

Go through the hole, and pull down to air up.
(The cap can be tricky if you have large fingers)

 

I have one , but never thought to use it under the truck for the spare lol

There is the 14” pvc pipe mod to make getting the tool connected to lower easier

the whole design to get to the spare seems to be a pain. I’m surprised there isn’t a mod that you can you your impact driver/drill to spin the tool to quickly raise and lower

fun side fact: kids toddler seat is a pain to get installed. Just realized it’s on the side of the spare kit. So if I ever have to get to it I have to remove and install toddler car seat on top of removing spare

 

Lowering your spare for the first time is like the tranny temp check mode, after you get it the first time it gets easier.

 

I bought a key online from Toyota. It wasn't expensive at all if i remember correctly

 

I also flipped my spare for easy access to the air valve. The low pressure light came on the next day. I did some investigation and found that the spare is supposed to be mounted face up.

Maybe it's just my truck, or my year/model.

 

These make it easier to check tire pressure in the spare.
