You added a bunch of weight on the stock springs, what did you expect?

OK everyone, just calm down. Clearly we're not taking into account that the tape is only accurate when it hooks onto something. Since the hook is on the ground it's removing at least 1/32" from the measurement.

Good tape measures are designed to give accurate readings both ways, that's why the hook jiggles back and forth to compensate.

If this is correct, then the stated number of 9.4" on the website is about 1/2" off. That is actually pretty significant on the trail.

Trucks with automatic transmissions that aren't Off Road or Pro have the smaller diff housing. This includes the Sport (and the SR,SR5, and Limited).

This isn't a factor in the clearance of the diff pumpkin. The only factors affecting this are tire size and air pressure.

You can get a skid plate for your diff. RCI has them. They make one for the larger diff (TRD Offroad/Pro, and AFAIK all MT trucks), and one for the smaller diff (listed as the Sport - covers models that are not TRD Offroad, Pro, or Manual transmission).

    https://rcimetalworks.com/product/2016-tacoma-rear-differential-skid

I bought one of Cyber Monday, but haven't received it yet because they build them to order.

I've thought about this. I have RCI full skids and sliders and I only didn't want to buy the diff skid because it will lower the clearance even more.

I went back and forth on this (and right now I have the same diameter tires as you do, in 265/70-17). On one hand there is slightly lower clearance, but on the other hand if I do scrape, the skid is taking the impact, not the bottom of the diff. The tires we're running should be giving us 1/2 inch more clearance at the diff over the stock tires, so diff clearance will essentially be the same as stock with this installed (actual stock clearance, not the "on paper" optimistic value they listed as stock).

So yeah... Maybe I do need to take it to the next level and go 275/70/17's even though I just wanted to keep it 265/70/17 for gear ratio.

And yes my wife laughed as she watched me go into the garage with a flashlight.

It's such a balance to find the right level of clearance and power without breaking the bank.

Yeah I was only planning on doing a 2" lift Not 3"... Pretty sure I'll rub with a larger tire. Didn't want to go down that rabbit hole. But I guess it's unavoidable.
