Ideas for a axes

I've done a search and came up blank.I'm looking for ideas on buying a ax that i can cut trees and clear trails. I just don't want to buy a cheap ass ax that never stays sharp and is harder than hell to put a edge on. Any Ideas?

 

Depends how much you want to spend. And the size/weight you want to carry.

I know little about axes, but your question made me curious as well.
From the little research I have done in the last couple minutes, prices have ranged anywhere from $25 to $400+ for a nice axe.

There are certain types of axes, and similar to picking out a knife- the materials used vary greatly. Different shapes are also available.

A company I've seen mentioned a few times was "Ox-Head". Check them out.

I would rather spend money on quality rather than quanity. Iwould be mostly felling trees and limbin them. thank for the info keep it coming. I'm tryin to stay under a 100 bucks.

 

You can buy them seperately , and they are like $ 200 each , how much more do you want to spend ?

x2 on the Gransfors - just hold on to your wallet and NEVER let anyone borrow it.

If you want to spend a little less, Snow & Nealy is good also, but nothing compares to a hand made Gransfors.

I own both, but I think the Snow and Nealy is a better value, just because I tend to lose tools.

 

lol looks like the vote is going to the Gransfors. You might as well spend more and have top quality stuff.

Here is another vote for Gransfors. I don't have one but I plan on getting one. A guy I work with has one and it is really nice.

 

The ax purists may murder me for this one but look into a Gerber. I have 2 of em and wouldn't trade em for the world. Easy to keep a edge on too as long as ur not chopping rocks. Here's the link on Amazon. You can get em cheaper elsewhere you just gotta look around.

Hope this helps! And also if you overstrike and hit the handle they dont break near as easy as wood and don't fray and bust like a fiberglass handle will.

 

Well i've use the fiskers its ok but the gerber version is better quality IMO. But it looks like you guys are persuading me to really look into Gransfors. I was already planning on a gerber ax to put in my truck with my gerber gator machete cause they are cheap and replacable. I guess stihl make a ok ax anyone know? I like to have my good forest tool for me and replacable for dumbass buddies lol
