The difference is pretty negligible. More often than not, tire sizes measuring the standard inch sizes such as 33x12.50r17.. etc measure less than the 33 rating where as the metric tire size (285/75r17) equivalent tends to be more accurate to the size they are shooting for. At work we sell a ton more of a 295/65R20 because it measures a true 35" over selling the 35x12.50r20 that typically comes in at a 34.5".
