TORSPD: NEVR

Was trying to solve for a low rpm extremely low torque problem.

Without VVTi the engine was extremely lethargic, in my opinion, from a stop. Relative to even the other engines I have.

So, an intake cams swap was done. To rule the cams out. Still haven't gotten around to do the exhaust.

Definitely not a straight line in troubleshooting. The exhausts are super simple though. They could be done at any time.

They took a back seat to having the turbo kit fabricated though.

Soon enough. Then I'll really know if the Kelfords are engineered for too much mid to high rpm.

 

So, when are you racing the Hoonicorn?

 

Right after I build a twin kit, which demands proper hood exposure for the freshest air ingestion.

 

Well I will say, torque is extraordinary for me in all rpms. Compared to stock cams. Even when not in boost. But, you are turbo, so comparing apples to ball bearings I suppose.

 

Minus some form of method to test static compression ratio at this point, process of elimination has us thinking that the engine is lower compression than 9.0:1.

 

@BassAckwards , this is a major portion of the delays in me getting work done on the header. Rather annoying level of work necessary to get to the oil pan...



What I am pointing to in the last photo, is the nut-orious failing oil pump nut.

 

Was having a flickering tin man oil light. Checked the oil, and the level was low. No problem, add some back in. Oil pan gasket had just been progressively failing.

Later that evening, the light was flickering a lot, or staying on. Back to the house for a game plan.

Ordered: new gaskets, oil pressure sensor, oil pump w/ reinforced pick-up tube, better engine mounts and trans mounts, subframe gusset kit.

Loctite from a previous engine entry, held, but being in there with all of the age and miles, time to replace those critical components.

The subrame is also well documented for failing at the engine mounts. Sure enough, barely any material was holding the metal together. Welded up the cracks for the time being, while waiting to receive the gussets.

 

No worries man, things happen! That is a lot of disassembly just to drop the pan, what a pain. It'll be worth it though once you get everything ironed out. Better to find it now than when you're on the track and it causes other problems

 

Definitely didn't want a failed engine and have to purchase another of unknown quality.

I'll get a picture of the subframe later today. This car, it is a great daily and better beater. Lol.
