Is locked glove box a safe place to keep a gun?

For when you can't carry inside of a place and need to lock it up (kids etc) in your truck, is the glove box what most people use? The only other option i saw was the $300

Glovebox is an absolute No. Thay have much smaller and thinner vaults for your truck with a cable that you wrap around one of the seat legs and just stash it under the seat. Much better and safer solution.

 

That's why i posted, i read some did the glovebox and while I am no criminal, it seems way too easy to crack into. Didn't think about the small safe wired under the drivers seat. Much cheaper and convenient compared to the console safe that is just over $300 shipped.

 

I am not sure where you are located, but in Colorado if you take a firearm onto public school property, the glove box isn't a legal option either. The gun has to be inside a locked container (not the glove box) inside of a locked car. Just another consideration.

 

I am in WA state. It didn't sound right, real life isn't a movie imo and the last thing I want is a kid or thief getting to it.

What thin safes do some of you use here under your seats? I'd rather it not be under the backseats for when kiddos are in the truck.

 

Depends on what part of the country you live in. Some places it's illegal to store it there because it's not considered secure enough. Some places it's legal, but not advisable due to crime rates. Some places you can hang it in a rack on your rear window and not have to worry about it growing legs.
Personally, a safe that's either hard-mounted or cabled to your truck is best.

They are more reasonably priced, but do your research as the console safe at least is not a full box. I preferred that option so I could make it shorter and put one of those tray organizers on top of it, to kind of hide it a little. But some people don't like the design, so just wanted to bring it to your attention.

Just bought a Lock'er Down center console safe first impressions are its beefy (weighs 12lbs) and bolts securely to the cab center console mount.


I learned after having my truck recently stolen that a determined thief will get into anything including a truckvault safe mounted in the bed. The only defense you have is making it not worth their time or slowing them down to a point of frustration.

Thank you for the info, torn between slim under the seat and console. I dont have room behind seats but just as well, i wanted an option to use when kids were in the car if i were in a jam. I will post again with what i get.

 

They'll never look in an empty Wendy's bag full of wrappers and stuffed under the seat!

 

I prefer something along these lines https://www.snapsafe.com/lock-boxes/, you can use it in multiple cars and if you need to transport it between a car and somewhere else (home, hotel, etc) it’s pretty simple and discrete to do. I think the console safes are cool but the ones I’ve look at are petty small on the Tacoma and will not easily fit some of the full size pistols especially if they have WMLs attached (though should be no problem with your 365.

 

Lock'er Down is awesome, very well built. It'll fit up to 5" barrel lenghts and multiple mags with some strategy.

As a cop, I can tell you that most thieves are more experienced and seasoned in hiding things as well as finding things than we are. That's what they do for a living, if you want to call it that. Like someone else said, the best thing to do is not try so much to hide something, but to make it as hard as possible to walk away with. Now if you're just interested in keeping something safe from little kiddo hands, then that's different altogether. A simple safe or locking device will do that.

 

I have a V-Line Brute pistol safe on my nightstand. It's a beast of a little safe, but it's just there to keep the kids off, not for thieves.

 

I keep mine within reach (either in the door pocket or center console). I do not leave weapon in my vehicle when I am not there. I do have a ccw though.

 

don't most car seats remove in 5 minutes with 4 bolts...

locking console boxes seem pretty expensive
and it's bragging advertisement of being "bolted to the center" seems a bit weak given that
a: 2nd gen Taco center console comes off quick and easy, part of the whole Toyota reputation "simple and easy to work on" thing
b: bolts can be unbolted with cheap hand tools, unless it's a specialty bolt that makes it harder to remove (like 5 point star)

it also looks very small like it can only hold certain model subcompacts and nothing larger but I'm not 100% sure
which seems like a problem given some people CC larger than subcompacts like G43 and similar

 

I have a small lock box on a cable if I need to lock it away when going somewhere they don’t allow concealed carry. Check your state laws as well. I just installed a holster on my console for use when driving- legal in my state.
