I have a 99 prerunner and am thinking about getting my buddies 2001 4x4 that is wrecked in the rear. how hard is it gonna be to frankenstein all the 4x4 stuff into my prerunner. both trucks are stock as can be. his is just smashed from the rear bumper to mid bed from were he was rearended by a dump truck. everything else is ok. It will still drive or atleast still move on its own power. my truck has 338,000 miles his has 154,000 both are 3.4l v6 engines his is standard shift mine is automatic. thank you for all yalls help.

He said his is automatic and his friends truck is manual. Not sure how that will swap out without swaping transmissions, computer, ect. And curious as to why your profile says you have a 1999 double cab? And they didnt make double cabs untill 2001...

i think im gonna rebuild his engine and leave it on a stand till mine finally gives up the ghost anyone know of a good quality inexpensive rebuild kit. It seems like my engine has no issues it doesnt leak doesnt missfire no noises and starts up like a brand new one. so it may be a while even tho im nearing 400,000 miles

i was wondering about all the electrical the trans and front end should be good but i know mine has to have some type of tcm for the automatic and his being standard i figured some of the electrical would be different or the electrical difference between 4x and the 2wd prerunner

woudn't it be easier to just take his truck and replace his rear end with the rear from your 99?

his frame is all bent up. as i said his truck still moves on its own but the rear end is pushed kinda sideways so it drives were the back sticks out way out to the right and the front goes straight. It would take alot of frame repair and its declared totalled. so im thinking of taking my frame and all his 4x4 and just building it using my frame cab and bed thats it. the other issue is insurance my truck is labelled 2wd but with all this frankensteining it would be a 4wd.

As soon as i get my money situation right im gonna get it he want 2100 for that truck i think its worth it being as the interior and whole front end is like new and it has half the miles as mine. the only major damage area is basicly from the rear bumper up to about 2 inches in front of the load sensing proportioning valve. right behind the gas tank at the crossmember is were everything straightens out

You can cut both frames and weld your good rear frame section to his good front end. Then you're just swapping the body work and rear suspension and axle out, no front suspension crap to deal with. Just a thought, but make sure you get someone who knows what they're doing with the frames (ie. cut it in a Z pattern, not just a straight cut for added strength). Just a thought.

Maybe just rip the bed off of his and send the truck to a frame shop. they totaled his truck for the cost of body work and paint and all that. They ought to be able to fix it with the frame straightener. Then throw your bed on it and drive away. Of course it's hard to tell since we do not have a detailed picture of his truck to view?
Either way fixing "his" truck is a lot easier than swapping engines and all the wiring is different. I have worked on a couple of projects and most everything emission wise is different from auto to manual and it's just a headache if you don't know what you are doing. The Civic project I worked on last. (the auto vs. manual) Only the head and block where the same. Intake, T/B, exhaust, and all the wiring are completely different!
