4x4 Automatic Transmission Grinding in Park. Help needed??

Situation.
New to me A340F with 120K miles. 04 V6 Double Cab with manual J-shift Transfer case. (4x4 conversion)

The problem:
When shifting into park the transmission grinds.
Sound coming from trans closer to rear of trans. Not transfer case.

What i have tried.:
- Adjusted neutral sensor to both extremes.
- Adjusted shift linkage.
- Disconnected shift link and manually shifted from below truck to eliminate shift linkage.
No change.

The details:
- 4wd conversion. Used A340F trans w/ 120K. Had very clean fluid when i got the trans.
- Trans from fellow TW member and reported to be good.
- New trans fluid & filter. 6 qts. Just below cold line.
- Valve body removed to check for cleanliness before installation.
- 2wd & 4WD valve bodies same part # & visually the same.
- Manual transfer case new to me. 1 qt fluid. Shifts cleanly.
- All sensors and solenoid wires were transferred from my 2wd trans to 4wd unit.
- Did not swap over solenoids or valve body.
- All new seals on external shafts.
- Engine rotates easy by hand and starts easy.
- When first installed, torque converter not seated.
- Found after trans bolts were tight.
- Could not rotate engine to align bolts. Re-seated and everything went together fine.
- When i shift into all gears and neutral all is fine.
- Both drive shaft flanges rotate F & R in 4H, 4L and 4H and stop in Neutral.
- When i go to park it grinds badly every time.
- If i jam it into park it goes sometimes.
- With the engine off it shifts and starts in park just fine.
- Shifts out of park just fine.
- Front and rear drive shafts are not connected yet to transfer case.
- Speed sensor and all three shift sensors on transfer case not connected to anything yet

Any ideas? I am now stuck and wondering if i have a bad trans or missed something.

 

Check to make sure the transfer case is in neutral?

Thoughbi would say the issue is with the trans, should've gone with r150f.

 

Worn parking pawl in the transmission?

 

I've had this happen before too. accidentally shift 4wd into neutral with my leg. then when i start the truck next time it won't move obviously and when i put it bank in park while running it grinds. shut engine off, put 4wd in high and start again.

i realize this might be a different issue obviously if you have drive and this happens every time.

 

Umm , you gotta put the rear driveshaft on

 

I do not think this is part of the transfer case. It does not matter what position the transfer case is in. 4L, 4H, N and 2L. Grinds when going into park.

If it matters and i do not think it does i accidentally put Dextron 3 into the trans. I just flush through 12 quarts of Dextron 4 to clear it. No change.

Anyways, i am wondering if the solenoids or valve pack could be part of this. I can shift through D, 2 & L but since there is no drive shaft hooked up there is no load on the trans.

Yes sir . Your rear driveshaft is splined to the transfer case output shaft as well as the stationary rear differential .
Without the rear driveshaft installed , there is nothing to hold the transfer case output shaft from turning .
When you put your transmission into gear , the transmission output shaft starts turning very quickly and wont stop unless you turn the engine off .

 

Thanks gearcruncher. Will get the drive shaft shortened Monday and move forward.

 

If you tried to throw it in park a few times and it growled at you , dont worry about it . Its just the parking pawl trying to catch one of the notches .
Back in the old days , i use to throw transmissions into park at 50 MPH during a test drive to rattle the govenor .
On the A340 series transmission , There is nothing inside there you can damage with no load on your transmission as long as you plan to connect the driveshaft soon

Any update on this. Having the same exact issue as you. If I start the truck in park it’s fine but when I shift out park and back into park I get that grinding/growling noise. Only have front driveshaft connected as well

 

Update ?

Turn the engine off before you put the transmission into park .You have to do it this way until you get the rear driveshaft back on the truck

 

For me it was the parking lock. Without the rear drive shaft there was nothing to stop the trans from spinning when I went into park. The grinding was the parking pawl trying to engage. Once the drive shaft was installed it went away.
