Everywhere I go I am late to the party. I just want to live in the Wild West.

SC isn’t the only state this is happening to, my friend. NC is full of that shit.

Oh I know, I have tons of friends there. I briefly considered moving to NC just to get out of Charleston but its even worse where I looked so i'll stick around here for a while and see where things go. My eventual goal is out west.

I think Alaska is the only true frontier now. Your next best options would be the northern central states.

Wife’s aunt and uncle own a fish/bear camp in Alaska. Been thinking about it but with the dark winters, being in the middle of nowhere, and the drug/alcohol use we don’t have any desire to move up there. We will just visit.

    You boys like Mexeeko!?

If you're close to the bigger cities, you shouldn't run into any more crazies than normal. Like take Anchorage on the coast for example, but I have been told to avoid Fairbanks for the reasons you've stated above. I've been trying to convince the wife that she'd like to PCS to Anchorage but she hasn't bought onto that yet.. yet. Yes, you'll have long dark winters and long light summers with all the insects you can muster but I've been told that you get used to it. Some of the kids from work that were stationed over there both married and single all say that they had a blast and would go back in a heartbeat but of course, your mileage may vary. If outdoor activities are a big part of your life, then you'd really enjoy living up there but the natives might give you a hard time.

I had an employee that had land and a single wide on the kenai river, he was building a house there. He was pretty crazy himself but he had some crazy stories about wildlife and the people. He said it gets hot and humid as hell and the mosquitos are insane in the summer. He would spend the summers in illinois because it was nicer weather and less bugs lol. He was saying when the lakes/streams freeze over in the fall, the mosquitos will live under the ice, and if you break the ice they all fly out, freeze in mid air and fall back down, that was their entertainment!

It’s great in the military you should talk her into it. Dad did 2 tours in Sitka and it was a blast growing up there when I was 8-11 and 13-16 years old.
