The word 'posthaste' is underrated, it's a great word.

Doing OK - nothing special. As usual, we are shut down this week. Usually still end up working a couple days, but this year with the slowdown in aerospace we’re doing a real xmas shutdown.
Even though I’ve got plenty of projects to work on, not getting much done. Somehow twisted my knee a couple days ago, which gives me an excuse for being lazy.

    Let’s see . . . Completely random story:

Back in 2001or 2002, a dozen of my dive buddies and I, (and my girlfriend/now wife) took a trip to a small Caribbean island.

Some of our gear was temporarily misplaced by the airline, so the first day we had the charter boat just take us for a whale watch.
We came across a mother and calf sperm whale. After hanging for a bit, mom apparently headed deep looking for lunch. Junior (about 20’ long) wasn’t ready for a deep dive, but was very interested in us. He came right over to the boat - we could have touched him - and hung out, floating vertically (“spy hopping”) for 10-15 minutes, until mom probably called him and he disappeared.
A while later we came across them again, and repeated the process.

The 3rd time, we actually had people in the water snorkeling and photographing when he came over.
It was pretty amazing to be eye to eye with a 20’ whale who was as curious about us as we were about him.

Since it’s generally not legal to approach marine mammals (unless you pay the government a bunch of money for a permit), we kept it short and tried to keep some distance - though I did accidentally kick him when he dipped just under the surface.

All in all, a very memorable experience.
