Maxxis RAZR AT in E and SL

I broke three wheels over the course of six months. Cush Cores were the only reasonable answer. I ran them in Aluminum wheels long before I put them into Carbon. You run Cush Cores not for wheel protection but for two stage damping. You get so much more grip and compliance with them. I'm telling you. You want Cush Cores!

Also, in Utah, typically everything is loose over hard.

On the MTB topic, I run DHF front and Aggressor rear. Set em up tubeless and they're perfect for the stuff I ride here in CO.

 

Thats the combo I used to run. As you well know, how you ride has a lot to do with tire choice. I'm on a Nomad and do a lot of rocky chunk, I climb a lot, but I climb to descend. I'm not chasing Strava times up the mountain, so switching to the Assegai/Dissector was a great move for me. It's like everything you like about the DHF/Aggressor turned up one notch. (but get you some Cush Cores, you'll thank me)

I'll look into the Assegai when it's time for a new set. I'm on a Remedy, and my riding sounds similar to yours. I love to climb, but I do it so that I can mob downhill afterwards. Mostly dry, chunky, techy stuff.

These seem to have everything I'm looking for in tires right now. Was leaning towards Duratracs but these make me reconsider. I wish they'd come in C load though. They're 53 lbs compared to 45 lbs on my Toyo Open Country A/T II. Duratracs are 45 lbs in C load so I may just stick with those HOWEVER I don't think they're snowflake rated whereas the Maxxis' are.

 

Yeah, exactly. I'm interested in the SL rated - and at 38.5 lbs, they become a bit of a goldilocks tire for me.

 

What's the main difference between SL and Light Truck? Just weight?

 

So, basically, tires are rated for how much air they can hold, which determines how much weight they can carry. LT tires are designed for super heavy loads, so they are supposed to hold 80psi. The tires that come on the tacoma are 112T (SL) rated, which is 1120Kg, 2500 lbs. More weight than the rear axle can carry.

An E-rated LT tire might be rated for 3175 lbs at 80 psi. Ironically, if you run an E-rated tire at 30 psi, then the weight rating of that tire is lower than the equivalent SL rated tire at the same pressure.

A lot of guys insist on running E-rated tires because A) most really cool looking tires only come in an LT size because there are way more Full-size trucks in American and B) they go with the assumption that LT tires are 10-ply tires and that means they can resist punctures better. But all tires, LT and SL are either two to three plys in the sidewall, regardless. So the construction of the tire has as much to do with it's resistance to puncture as anything else.

The reality is, however, an E-rated/LT tire is heavier and does tend to survive better at ultra-low pressure over sharp rocks. I mean, an LT tire is heavy AF. The LT might be 59/60 lbs per tire, where the SL may only be 40/41 lbs. But on the flip-side, thats 20lbs more of sprung, rotating mass, per tire, that the truck has to spin up, slow down and that the suspension has to damp over bumps. LT tires on light vehicles makes for a miserable ride, and a loss in handling, braking and acceleration.

So the TLDR is. Unless you are driving at ultra-low pressures over sharp rocks on the regular, the vaaaast majority of us will be much happier running an appropriate SL rated tire on our svelte Tacomas.

and Double TLDR, why the SL Maxxis is so interesting to me. It looks really cool, it has serious off-road cred in NZ and Australia, and it's light.

 

That's super helpful, thanks. I run C load at about 32 lbs right now but they are LT. The ride isn't super soft on the city streets. I rarely get into gnarly stuff so SL is probably a good choice for me, which points me to the Duratrac. I don't see the Razr in 265/75/16 C load SL anywhere. They are super cool looking though.

 

C-load is different than SL. C-loads were designed for even lighter jeeps and may have a lower weight rating than an SL, depending on the tire.

and according to Maxxis the have the 265/70-16 is SL, which is fine enough for me. But I'd love to see someone with them or even know if local tire dealers are carrying them yet.

 

I did see that but I want to run 265/75/16 as they're a little larger. The Maxxis website shows dealers across the US that are carrying Maxxis tires. I'd have a couple hour drive from my place to the nearest.

I actually ordered the Razr AT 285/70r17 SL load last week. Should be arriving Saturday. Only about $160ea. Weight was a big factor for me, only 43lbs for an aggressive looking 33” tire.

Me too! Got a pair in my cart waiting to pull the trigger but I’m nervous about it. Was sure I was going with wildpeaks after doing so much research, but these seem like they could be a great option for slightly less money. Feel like I may just jump in with both feet.

 

We've not received any snow, so I don't need to replace the dogshit OEM tires just yet, so I'm waiting. Their popularity in NZ is very encouraging, but I'd like to see some actual photos of some (not just the computer renders), you know?
