How do you like the Tacoma compared to the 4Runner? Sitting on the fence of which vehicle to purchase. Thanks in advance for your input!

Tacoma - not enough T4R - too much
hmmm well since my 4runner is 25,000 years old it seems like there is always something. just finished a major overhaul of some pretty basic things (water pump, timing, cv axles, lbj, a million different bushings, cam seals, pinion seals, rack and pinion, tie rods, more gaskets, etc. LOL!) so hopefully 168k will turn into 268k before you know it. 4runner is more fun to drive, its the ride that gets abused and taken on hunting trips. the truck has only been in snow once and on one dirt road lol! imo if you are going to get one i'd go taco, cus if you buy a 25 year old car your friends and family will question your sanity with how much youll pay for one, and even more on how much youll spend on keeping it on the road, unless you neglect basic stuff

Thanks! After driving myself crazy trying to determine which Tacoma I want (2021 TRD OR DCLB in cement), I am now toying with the idea of a 4Runner instead. I wanted the long bed to have the ability to sleep in the back with a cap on the back. But, one can sleep in the back of a 4Runner as well - with heat, A/C windows, sunroof, etc. I prefer the look of the Tacoma and the utility of having a truck bed. But, the 4Runner performs better on and off road, less mods required or necessary on a 4Runner. The 4Runner more expensive, but a Tacoma with a new $2,500 cap makes the numbers more comparable. Mostly a mountain biker, but I ski, hunt and fish as well. I am 58 and am looking at this vehicle as my get away / have fun vehicle for the next 12 years as I ride off into the sunset. I read that the 4Runner is made in Japan as if that is a Quality Control positive in comparison to the Tacoma being built in Mexico - don't know about that one! I bought a new 4Runner in 1988 with the removable top and it was a great vehicle!

Good luck. I had a 1996 4Runner and loved it. But in 2010 it had about 160k miles and was developing too many maintenance and repair items for me to tackle as my daily driver. It was a manual, and by 2010 they no longer made a manual 4Runner. I considered the FJ Cruiser, and in a test drive found I had significant line of sight problems out the rear quarters. I decided to go with the Tacoma and was very happy with it for another 160 k miles till 2018, and looked again at the 4Runner conceding that maybe I didn't need a manual transmission any longer (at 67, I still ride a Dual Sport moto for my shifting appreciation days). Well, I was torn, but the prices were just a little too steep, and so I went with another Tacoma, auto this time. From time to time, I debate with myself whether I made the right choice - then I end up throwing something dirty, or muddy, or bloody in the back of the Tacoma and realize I appreciate the utility of a truck bed.

    Gone - but not forgotten

    4Runner2.jpg

Great Utility, 2.7L 5Speed, awesome reliability - but I was pulling a trailer load of moto to my cabin more and more regularly, so I traded it in:

    IMG_0637.jpg

2018 TRD Sport enjoying the utility, and the comfort:

But, to stay on topic, and even though Toyota didn't call the color on the 4Runner MGM - there is a trend going here for the last couple decades

Thanks for your response! Back to agonizing over which way to go! My heart and eyes are saying Tacoma and my brain is saying 4Runner!

I dabbled with the idea of a 4R but the idea of paying 40K for a wildly outdated (but admittedly bomb proof) drivetrain was too off-putting to overcome. Plus, all my muddy, wet, fishy, frozen gear fits perfectly in the Tacoma long bed, as does kayak with a bed extender.Depends on your specific needs I guess.
