Well her husband could be dying............she has put some (defensive) barriers up, which from her point of view might help her cope, controls - controlling information when nothing else is in her control. Maybe too many for what you see as blocking information. Very weird she is actively putting up more barriers and her journey with God may be a bit stuck, she has not put him in control really.

I don't know the history and I know nothing really.........but stepson.......where is his birth father in this? Again just an angle.

I assume you have mentioned to her, directly that you raised him, he is your son, and you just don't understand why no details.

Dave I’m so sorry you and your wife having to go through this whole ordeal. I pray for your stepson and hope he makes a full and complete recovery soon. Sounds like your stepsons spouse suffers mental illness specifically hyperreligiosity possibly with other components such as bipolar, mania, even psychosis. Nothing you can do about it at this time. The current psychological trauma she is going through is exacerbating her problems. Just try to maintain civility with her and don’t push her, she may open up a little. (I have a masters in psychology but do not and have not practiced clinically but try to stay somewhat current). Hang in there we will keep sending prayers your way.

We have considered this, and have been very patient and offered many soothing and kind words, and sat through very long phone calls as she poured out her soul to us. I have no doubt that she is fragile right now. Doesn't stop me from seething right at the moment, because of her active efforts to prevent us from learning about his condition.

My wife's son, my stepson. A grown man by the time I met him. I had nothing to do with his upbringing. His mother is the one who deserves to know. They have never been estranged or out of touch with one another. There is no history of animosity. If anything, the opposite. Especially where the wife is concerned.

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas.

Thanks Ken. She has always been a religious person since we've known her, but lately she has become more so. I do not want to speak ill of religion! Far from it. I think it is just the way her fears and anxieties are manifesting themselves. I worry that it may color her decision making as regards her husband's medical care.

Thank you for clarifying. Has your wife spoken to her with you not around? As his mother and all.

(NOT SAYING SHE IS "RIGHT" IN ANY WAY)

I too am a God fearing Christian but some people can take things like religion to extremes where it becomes a psychiatric disturbance that affects normal social functioning and interaction. Her decision making abilities are definitely a concern. Only suggestion I have is that your wife call (not text) her and try to establish a rapport as woman to woman and mother of her husband. We are all rooting for your stepsons recovery.

Prayers going out to your step son Dave. I just hope and pray that he pulls through this. I am a believer but don't attend church. During my youth I discovered things that happened but I won't bring them up here. Hopefully it is just the stress of the situation that has her doing what she is doing. At a time like this, you need to family around, even if you can't be there you can still offer support.:pray:

A word of advice, for those with dogs. Often on New Year’s Eve people light off fire works which scares the poop out of most dogs. Many a dog gets out and runs away on New Years. Keep your dogs inside tonight and close . Keep your fur babies safe.
Mine is a hunting dog and loves the sound of shotguns but doesn’t like fireworks, He’ll be a couch potato tonight up on the sofa. Be safe and keep your dogs safe.

    Evening all:
I could see hitting a tree if the deer was moving, but when they are just standing there !
I was thinking about cutting out the section with the bullet in it and mounting it, at least good for a laugh!

Don't know what to say either Dave, I would think that she would keep his mother informed about his condition, if I were his mother I would not be too happy at all. Like all the others, hoping for the best and that he will pull through this.

Happy New Year folks from Mighty Mortgage Manor!!

Took our Black Lab in for a quick recheck at the vet's yesterday - she is doing great. We brought Lynn's mom up for dinner last evening - steak, crab cakes, potatoes and green beans, some wine (Lynn & her mom) and bourbon (me). After Lynn took her mom back down to her house we settled in and watched some of the New Year's Eve shows...ugh. Finally gave up and went to be about 10:30 and I was asleep by 10:45. Planning on doing nothing today.

I wish you all a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous and Fun-filled New Year!!!
